A perfect tool for EngineersLove these pencils, my dad had these when I was younger and he would always use them when helping me out with homework. Now a college student in Electrical Engineering, I have to say these are beauties. The weight and grip, along with the precision of the tip on these is great. Especially for their intended use of drafting, in my case circuit drawing.Only downside is that the tips are really sharp, and they don't come with a good sleeve to prevent them from poking holes in your bag, so you'll have to be careful not to just throw them into a pocket unless you want to be stabbed in the leg. 5A huge upgrade from bic mechanical pencils for not that much moneyAs an engineering student, I've been using this pencil pretty heavily for 2-3 years now and love it. It's weight and balance and knurled grip just make writing better. That means I write more legibly and just enjoy the process more. One little problem I've had with it is sometimes (I'm talking like 5 or so times since I've had it) the lead will get stuck in the tip. All you have to do is poke it out with another lead. Really not bad. I'm wondering if this happens to me more so because I use a softer (2B) lead.I also have a rotring (~30 dollars) that I like. The main difference is that the rotring is considerably heavier (all metal) though all that weight is very well balanced. I like to use that pencil for slower, more careful writing (like homework) whereas I use the lighter draft-matic for faster note taking in class. I like them both for different reasons, but I'd say the draft-matic is more versatile and is a far better value. Highly recommended! 5Really nice and comfortable pencil!!I really like this pencil. It feels so right in my hand.I have pretty much tried, used, and owned about every mechanical pencil made. I was just trying to find a good one and was about to give up! I cannot find my old Rotrings and the new ones pale in comparison. Even the new Pentel pencils are not very good anymore.I decided to try this one and I am glad that I bought it. I don t really know how long it will last, but it seems to be pretty well made. As far as drop proof-I doubt it, but none of the new ones today will stand up to a drop. 5Beautiful mechanical pencil will last for yearsThe .3mm Alvin Draftmatic mechanical pencil is perfect. Has excellent weight and balance, feels substantial in the hand not too light or too heavy. The stainless steel grip doesn't irritate my fingers at all. Don't even feel it. In fact, it's one of my favorite features of the product.I also appreciate and admire the lead windows. Yellow is a recent favorite color of mine so I'm happy they have it for this mechanical pencil. My only wish is that they had a variety of colors to choose from. I recently purchased the Mab Graves limited edition mechanical pencils the company collaborated with her on, and they are wonderful as well. I won't deduct any stars on the lack of additional colors though bc the product performs beautifully. I ended up using nail art from Sally's and transparent tape to the handles to be able to tell the yellow .3mm pencils apart from each other (so I don't have to look at the lead window every time I want to change lead) problem solved. Also worth noting: the previous yellow .3mm Alvin pencil, I had for 9 years. I still have it, but just updated with some new ones. They will last you a long time. 5One of the Best Mechanical Pencils for the PriceI imagine you are looking at reviews to see what others thought of this pencil and/or you are on the fence about purchasing.Let me say that this is EASILY worth its price!Pros:Excellent, confidence inspiring, build qualityExceptional knurled grip sectionFront balanced weight (making writing more comfortable)Satisfying, solid lead advance clickLead grade indicator (not necessarily useful to me)Sturdy spring tensioned pocket clipLightweight+ more!Cons:Plastic body (it is of a good quality and feels tough despite the fact)Non-retractable lead sleeve (This is not so big of an issue, as most mechanical pencils are not. Just be careful not to poke yourself!Lead grade indicator rotates instead of locking in place (This is more personal preference. I've yet to come across a pencil that does click into place. However, it is still quite stiff and is unlikely to move accidentally.)This is an EXCELLENT quality pencil. The cons are very slight and more personal preference. I bought this at the same time as a Rotring 600, and although I prefer the Rotring's weight, this pencil is preferred when trying to write quickly or for a long period of time. 5Great all around pencil! This is a great pencil! I purchased this pencil to add variety to my stationary and to compare to my GraphGear 500 and my Rotring 600 in 0.5mm. I must say that this pencil suits my needs well and in my opinion, more versatile than the Rotring 600.Cons:-this pencil has very aggressive gnurling.Pros:-looks very similar to Rotring 600-lighter than Rotring 600-works well for long writing/ drawing sessions-has very aggressive gnurling. ( I know I listed the gnurling a con but I prefer a more aggressive barrel for mech pencils )-1/3 the price of Rotring 600Do yourself the favor and buy one! Whether you are on the fence about buying a Rotring or whether you just want an attractive and very functional pencil, the Alvin Draft-Matic will not disappoint. That is, unless you don t like aggressive gnurling. 5Five StarsVery nice this is a lot more thin than the graph gear 500!!Update: I've used it for a drawing.I put in pentel 4h lead and it's very good for doing light pre drawings!! It holds conformably. 5So Bummed!YEARS ago, I purchased this wonderful pencil. I yelled from the roof tops and told anyone who would listen how much I loved it. I used the same pencil for years and years happily (we are talking more than 5 years but less than ten). Then it broke (I dropped it on the tip of the barrel on concrete - it was all me) and the lead would not move any more. Since that original pencil, I have purchased 4 or 5 of these pencils in three years hoping to get back to my original pencil. Not one of those pencils have worked more than six months. They just are not made like they use to be and have not worked well. I am sooooooooo very sad as this was my favorite pencil ever. I am a dorky engineer, so I know a few things about pencils. I am also VERY loyal to my favorite! Guessing I need to find a new pencil. 2The best 9mm pencil I've foundThe best pencil I've found. OK...I guess I'm getting old but I find I prefer a pencil to ink pens anymore. Many of the cheaper model mechanical pencils just don't do it for me. Either the grip starts slipping on the shaft of the pencil or the ends start unscrewing themselves. The 5mm Pentels worked best but I was always breaking the lead. I switched to a 7 mm HB pencil and that was a big improvement... but me the "sweet spot" is a 9mm HB lead. This pencil appears to be solidly made and a great writer. 5Good pencilVery good pencil, well worth the $10 plus shipping. Why buy 5 pencils per semester when you could buy one that lasts a life time. I did not choose this pencil, this pencil chose me. 5
