Only lasted about 2 monthsI bought this filter Dec 4, 2018 and my hair has felt awful for about a month now (3/10/2019. That means it only lasted about 2 months. I've bought a less expensive filter which lasted much longer. The ad for it and the documentation with the filter said it would last 6 months. I thought I'd spring for the higher price as I remember them being good long ago. I won't ever buy these again. I don't recommend them. Too expensive for as long as it lasted. My hair felt like i could not put enough conditioner in it. it was tangled and matted and needed a ton of conditioner. The documentation say's each system has been tested according to NSF/ANSI 177 for reduction of free available chlorine. The concentration of free available chlorine in water entering the system was reduced to a concentration less than or equal to the permissible limit for water leaving the system, as specified in NSF/ANSI 177. They have not been evaluated for free available chlorine reduction performance with the presence of chloramines in the water supply. Whatever that means, we must have that in our water as this filter wasn't that great. The filter that cost half the price lasted 5 months and made my hair feel much better.2Test Strips Prove It Doesn't Work Was really excited to get this and installed it today as soon as it came in. After letting the shower run for the directed amount of time, I used Water Works 5-way Water Test Strips to test for pH, Total Alkalinity, Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine and Total Hardness. I tested distilled water for a control, and also tested tap water, water from my Brita pitcher and the water from the Aquasana AQ-4105. Distilled water came back as expected with neutral readings. Tap water came back as Very High in Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity and pH. The Brita pitcher reduced all of those to the Low or OK range. The Aquasana did NOTHING. The readings came back exactly the same as the tap water. I repeated the tests 3 times and got the same results each time. If you're buying this to help with hard water, save your money. 1Compared Aquasana 4100 to Aquabliss SF220...here's what I foundHello, Fellow Shower Shoppers,I just moved and was trying to replace my beloved TerraSpa shower filter from years ago, to get the nasty chlorine out of my life (I use a PUR filter on my drinking water). Apparently TerraSpa is no more, so the search started all over. After reading a lot of reviews and ratings (on and off of Amazon) on these two products, Aquabliss and Aquasana, I ordered both and installed both, one in each bathroom shower, and compared. Here's what I found in my personal experience and preferences.THE UNITSAquasana is large visually, and about 3 pounds, so it's hefty. The Aquabliss is about half that at 1.6 pounds and considerably shorter and less visually intrusive. They both use great multi-stage filtration, but the real work horse in both is the KDF-55. Aquabliss adds calcium sulfite and activated carbon on top of that, while Aquasana employs coconut carbon as their added "secret sauce."INSTALLATIONThey both require Teflon tape (super easy) for all threads, like all shower attachments do. You will not need a wrench for the Aquabliss as it hand tightens. You WILL need a wrench for the Aquasana. You will need to flush both of them to get rid of the excess carbon (the gunky black stuff). I would flush any filter like this for about 2 minutes on cold, then at least 2 minutes on hot, and do the shut off/turn on with the water at least three times as it is the initial rush of water that needs to be clear before use.I found that one big difference in design is that you can use any shower head you like with the Aquabliss as it does not affect your choice due to its straight design. The Aquasana on the other hand, comes with its own shower head, which while nice and adjustable, is non-negotiable. I tried using my old Moen shower head on the Aquasana, but the design won't allow for it. If this matters to you, that might be a deal breaker right away.EFFECTIVENESSAs far as chlorine smells goes, they are similar in their reduction, but to my ridiculously sensitive nose, the Aquabliss seemed to be fainter, and a bit cleaner smelling. I then showered with both, same shampoos/soaps, same temps, and again, very close water feel. As we all should know by now, those pool tests and strip tests are a bit useless for shower filters, so I wasn't even going to waste my time (and yours) going there. So, here's what I decided. Since the feels are similar, and the materials are both top notch, but the Aquabliss smells better TO ME, it comes down to cost, ease of installation, and flexibility of shower heads. Replacement filters for Aquasana cost more than the original unit at $52 here. Plus, you are replacing pretty much the ENTIRE base of the unit. Aquabliss costs just $15 and you are only replacing the inside filter.Aquabliss is the winner, at least for my needs.Hope this helps you all figure out your choices a little better.3Shoots water all over bathroom - HUGE LEAKUnusable because of major leakage in the neck, below the chrome screw, between the screw and the plastic neck (not between the screw and the shower pipe). SHOOTS WATER ALL OVER BATHROOM. This is not a little dripping leak, it is huge and unacceptable. Instructions say to make sure chrome screw is not too tight to prevent this. I tried it with the screw turned every couple millimeters for at least 10 tries and no matter how tight or loose there was still a huge leak shooting up and out of the shower. I returned it and ordered another thinking this particular unit was defective, but turns out the replacement unit is also defective. Same exact issue. I am very mechanically inclined and I also watched a couple YouTube videos on installation thinking I was missing something.1Did not remove chlorine as advertisedThis shower filter failed to do as advertised. It did not remove the chlorine. My chlorine levels were almost exaxtley the same with and without the filter. I'm so upset that they falsely advertised. I encourage anyone who buys this product to do their own chlorine tests to see how well it's working. And be sure to test it in hot water like you would shower in.1Good showerhead filter system , but filter replacement is pricey I originally got the Aquasana with the white plastic braided hose and shower head when I was living in an apartment and recovering from some pretty intense surgery. The water was provided by the local municipality and was heavily treated with chlorine based on the intense smell. There was enough chlorine in the water that it actually irritated the surgical location whenever I showered. Due to the nauseating smell and irritation of the chlorinated water, I was desperate for a solution. I looked at several different shower head and filter options online and finally chose this unit because the reviews were pretty good and it had a wand.It was very easy to install, even by me who at the time who could barely move. It was actually more difficult to remove the existing shower head to install the Aquasana. So I couldn't ever imagine ever paying the $77, or whatever the going rate is now, to have someone install it for you. I am a small female and had just had major surgery and was able to install myself. So please don't bother paying someone else to install as that is just a waste of money. Get a friend to install if you have too and take them out to dinner. That would be a much better use of the money. The Aquasana definitely addressed the issues for me buying to begin with and at the time I was very thankful how well it worked out for me. In hindsight though, I would recommend going with the chrome shower head version as it's not that much more, maybe $8-$10, and I strongly suspect the flex hose is much easier to use than the stiff, braided plastic hose that came with the version that I purchased. The plastic version has never fully worked itself free of hose bends and kinks, due to packaging I suspect, and it has been almost 11 months since I purchased. I was a bit weak, post surgery, and it was really annoying to have to force to twist the plastic hose whenever I showered. I also suspect that the chrome version will outlast the plastic version. Why Only 3 Stars? While I like the product overall and it did what I needed it for, I find the cost of a replacement filter hard to justify. At the time, because of my situation, I was pretty desperate and needed something quickly. However, since I purchased my unit, the filter is now almost the price that I originally paid for the entire unit. I am not sure why these replacement filters are so expensive, that is something that the seller would need to address, but I am definitely looking for a different long-term alternative. The last time I checked, a replacement filter was over $56. Given that the filter needs to be changed approximately every six months or so, that adds up pretty fast. I would think that if the filter was a bit cheaper, there would be a greater percentage of repeat customers. I am hoping that the filter prices go down to a more reasonable cost. 3It's doing something but at what cost?IntroductionI was very happy when I first purchased my first Aquasana AQ-4100 over a year ago. Although a lot of people complained about the legitimacy of whether or not this filter actually removes chlorine, I did notice an improvement in the quality of my shower water. Overall I am very happy with the product and it's performance. When you live in a pre-war building built in NYC, you need this filter to stop the years of building particles in the water from coming through. My hair and skin feel more hydrated and I feel a lot cleaner. My towel would develop horrible odors after a couple of showers but no more! My shower smells better and is cleaner. There are a lot of benefits to using a shower filter and I highly recommend it to others.ComparisonThis filter definitely out performed dozens of other shower filters I've tried before in both pressure and water quality. The pressure was actually astonishing as it felt like no difference from connecting a shower head directly to the water. Those "multi-stage" filters quickly clogged to almost no water pressure. I was replacing them every month or so. I prefer higher pressure, it feels like the dirty is blasting off and I feel a lot cleaner. This filter lasted 4 to 6 months.Unfortunately...Things eventually do get ugly with this filter. After around the 5th month, I notice a dramatic decrease in water pressure and brown water spewing out for some seconds every time the shower is turned on. This is your warning that it's time to replace. That's when you realize replacement filters are the same price as complete replacement units. You will find yourself in an endless circle every 6 months buying a new shower filter and head because the pricing makes no sense. This indeed makes the company seem very greedy. Not to mention you need to buy your own plumber's tape because they decide not to include any.It would be nice for this company or another to include return labels for recycling old filters. Now I've got some used ones laying around that I'll need to throw away. They could probably be refurbished and sold again.4SKIP ITWe used hard water strips on sink water and then the water from the filter. It s the same- No difference. We will be returning this product.1Overpriced and doesn't work! This is a sham, a total piece of junk knock-off. I strongly believe the positive reviews are either clueless people that don't actually pay attention or they are all paid/compensated reviewers not being honest. I am going back to my culligan showerhead and filters because they actually work. I had tried this thinking I might get even better filtration or a longer life but I regret the experiment.1Does not filter any 'chlorine' at all, water company measured before and after.I can verify that this does NOT block any chlorine at all. My water company measured the levels in my water before and after, and the levels are virtually identical. The levels are still very bad and the smell is overwhelming......this filter did nothing, absolutely nothing.I gave this two stars instead of one because I did not verify the before or after of anything else it is reported to filter. All that being said, does anyone know of a filter that actually does filter out chlorine?2Trying is Believing! Update: 5 Stars for sure.It has now been eight months and we are so happy with this filter! Our black showerhead has no mineral build up and is as black as the day it was installed. It delivers what it claims.First, a little background to why we purchased this filter. When the government lowered the allowable levels of arsenic in drinking water our private community well (150 hookups) association was required to build a treatment plant to remove the now unacceptable arsenic levels. The low interest State loan to pay for this also required we start adding chlorine. The chlorine amounts added are so high that when my laundry is done washing and I open the door it smells like I had added bleach! I have to step back from the sink when I fill the dishpan because my eyes burn and run from the chlorine. And, when the powder room toilet refills we must close the door because of the overwhelming chlorine smell. Our scalps were itching and bery red after showering. My hair was falling out so badly it began to scare me and I was ready to see a doctor. And, we both developed very dry skin.I was very skeptical about the reviews for this filter, claiming great results after the first use. How could that be? What could we lose...? So, we decided to give it a try. After a month we are now among the people who report great results from using the Aquasana Premium Filter. I also saw results after my first shower, my hair was unbelievable soft and tangle free. It was as though I d used a conditioner but, my hair was full of body not weighed down and lifeless like from using a conditioner.I am thrilled and so happy that my hairbrush is no longer full of hair !We bought the unit without the showerhead and my husband installed our personal choice (new). During our construction my husband placed the shower plumbing to our height preferences (see pictures) so we have no issues of the showerhead location being to high or to short.Comments about dark water (carbon): it lasts for approx. 4-5 seconds, the time it takes my water to get hot. Not an issue at all.I will upgrade this to a 5 Star rating if the filter does not clog and is still effective at six months. 5Great product, greedy company? I bought the Aquasana Filter set that included the wand (not chrome set). For starters, I only purchased this filter six months ago and already the price has jumped $20. The replacement filter now costs the amount I paid for the whole set. I know manufacturing costs go up, Russian hackers scare Wall Street and threat of alien invasions all lead to higher prices, but that's a 40% spike in 6 months. Seems a little excessive to me, but maybe the CEO needed to pay for his new yacht, know knows? The unit is so easy to setup, it almost installs itself. The $104 installation charge is a total chicanery, please don't pay that, anyone... EVER. I'll come to your house and install it if you need me to. The only tool you will need is a wrench or plyers and you may not even need those. Unscrew your current shower head from the pipe and screw on the main section of the filter (minus the wand and head). I was able to finger tighten the filter collar screw onto the pipe without any seal leakage. Run the water through the filter until until the the water turns clear (it will be black at first as it cylces out the carbon). Next, tightened the wand collar onto the outlet spicket on the filter. And that's it, good to go.I was expecting the whole unit to be constructed out of cheap plastic, but in fact it seems to be pretty durable. Although the chrome ring on the head is not metal, but cheap "chrome" plastic. The clamp that holds the wand is tight and holds the wand securely. I've had other shower heads with wands that constantly bent forward, even after tightening the collar, which is why I was hesitant to purchase this version with the wand. But so far it works great. The head has a good pattern to it and is variably adjustable from "spray" to "massage". I've used some with preset patterns, so this is a welcome feature. The hose length is good enough to wash the dog in the bath, but not so cumbersome it gets in the way. One caveat with the hose is that it's somewhat stiff and won't relax after use. In the photo, you can see how it protrudes out some. One feature that benefits me is that the wand provides a few extra inches to the shower head height. Being 6'4", not being sprayed in the face by the shower head is a nice bonus, plus you don't have to worry about throwing out you back as you contort to wash your hair. The perils of height, sad indeed. I do not remove the wand often, so I cannot speak to the durability of the joint holding the wand, but it appears sturdy.Concerning the quality of the water, which is probably the main reason for purchase, I can only state my experience based on viewable and perceivable results. For starters, the taste of the water dramatically improved. It's city water that I use and before installing this shower head, it had a chocolatetly bitter start with metallic undertones and a chlorine finish. Now the water has a sweet, mild flavor. I'm no biologist, but I think that's an improvement. Granted, I suppose most people aren't bottleing water in the shower and selling it, but I think the taste should in some way speak to its quality. Another thing I noticed is that the white (and other color) build up that used to grace the shower walls is now gone. Also gone, is the black crud that grew on the bottom of the shower curtain. Here again, I haven't pulled out the micron microscope or fired up the spectrometer, but I think that means something has changed, for the good??? Maybe if you're trying to grow live cultures in your shower, you'd find this news disappointing. And for my final observance, The Female Test. Several women in the household have commented on their hair being being better in regards to "split ends", "more body" and several other words and phrases that are foreign to me. The consensus is that their hair feels better after the install of this water filter. My hair feels like... hair, honestly. Split ends sound painful, so I hope I never have to deal with that.Another feature that needs to be mentioned, is that if you purchase the wand, then do not like the function of it, you can mount a shower head directly onto the filter spicket. In fact, you could just use your old head, as it's the same thread pattern. Concerning the pricing and sets available, if I was currently buying one, I'd go with the chrome package. For a few dollars more, you get a metal hose that should last longer and "drape" better in the shower. Look at my photo to see how the rubber hose rests. So, I don't have any fancy chemistry sets to check the ratio of parasites to particles. I didn't break apart the filter to see what's inside, it could be sand for all I know. And I didn't consult the EPA for a side by side analysis of my water before and after. I just know that there's a difference from before and after. Was it worth $52 (my cost)? At the time, yes. Will I continue to shell out $100 a year to replace the filters, maybe. I plan to soon buy a house with well water and I'll see how that goes. One less star for the $20 price increase in less than 6 months.Happy showering. 4Help for Itchy Pregnant Women! I'm writing this review from the perspective of being pregnant: I've been suffering from an INSANE itch for several months now. I've tried everything, but I always seemed to be itching (like my body is on fire) after a shower. I assumed it was a lotion I was using, or a lack of lotion, or my diet. The only thing that would calm my skin is taking a Claritin or Benadryl. But, that's not something I wanted to continue to do every day of my pregnancy (even though my doc said it was safe).I tried everything. Finally, I gave in and decided it must be something in the water since this was happening every time after I showered. I searched Amazon and found this Aquasana product had high reviews so thought I would give it a try.The product was super easy to install (I did it myself) and I used it the same night after installing.I'm happy to report: NO MORE ITCH! Apparently, my water was the problem. So, I just wanted to write this for any other pregnant women who may be itching like crazy and searching high and low for a solution. It could be your water! 5The left test strip is regular tap water, the ...The left test strip is regular tap water, the right is from the aquasana shower head. I used test strips after letting the shower head run for a few days. No difference, my eyes are still burning from the chemicals.1It will save your dry hair, your dry skin and your relationship!OMG!!! Thank you to this product for saving my dry hair, my dry skin, and my relationship!! So, I live with my boyfriend in his house, in an area with very hard water. Most people here have reverse osmosis, and exchange tanks or whole house water filtration. That's how bad the water is here. I begged him to put in a whole house filtration system, but he didn't want it at his house. He says there is nothing wrong with the water, and doesn't give a darn.. (Although he was the one who tried four different cleaning products on the guest bathroom glass door shower after his boys were here for three months, trying to remove the water spots. And the water here is fine... hmmm) He wouldn't go for the exchange tanks either. So now, either I figure something out for myself as far as the shower goes, (I buy my own ice and bottled water, he uses the tap and yucky freezer ice), or I am moving out. Who knew crappy water could end a relationship! But that's how much I hate it.Finally, after researching my options, I found out that they make shower head filters. DING DING!!! I was sooo excited. This unit kept coming up in my research in the top 10, mostly in the top five and above, over and over again. When it arrived, I asked him if I could put it in the shower. He said no. I asked if I could put it in the guest shower. He said YES! I installed it myself, it was very easy and quick, less than 10 minutes. The next morning when I used it, I could not believe the difference! My hair is so much softer, and no longer dry, my skin is softer, I don't have to use shower lotion, and extra strength lotion after showering. I love it so much, I told my boyfriend he cannot use it. I want the filter to last as long a possible. It's only for me!!Pros:It does not change the water pressure in any wayIt is very easy and quick to installIt definitely changes the water, and makes it softerCons:You cannot move the shower head around. Where ever it sprays, that's what you get. I would like to point mine downward a little, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I didn't know at the time that they made one with a wand. Some might like that model better. (That one would have been better for my dog too)5
