Could taste the woodI really like that these are compostable and I like they way they look. However I wouldn t recommend them for dessert like we used them for. When eating our smooth cheese cake these felt a little rough and you could taste the wood so it took away from the yummy cheese cake. It was just a little embarrassing once I realized what my guest were tasting.3Surprisingly good! After reading some of the other reviews I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about these but as soon as I started using them I was quite impressed. The size is small, more like a dessert fork, but I've successfully used these daily for a couple of weeks to eat everything from spinach (cooked) to potatoes to rice to pasta. They're probably not the best for salads or other things you need to really stab as the tines are relatively short. They hold up extremely well in very hot foods and have a very sturdy feel. They do have a woody taste (similar to the little wood things that come with Hood ice cream cups) if they get very wet, but you quickly become accustomed to it and it isn't overpowering. Plus, they come in packages of 100, while similar products are only available in bulk and where does one really have the room or inclination to store 1,000 forks anyway? I would certainly recommend these as a nice alternative to plastic.Update: I've had to take away one star and rate these a four as I've had several forks from the middle of the package with splinters and have had to throw away at least four or five so far for fear of a splinter in my tongue. The others have been fine though.4We're perfect for a fishing birthday partyWe're perfect for a fishing birthday party. I'm not sure how'd they be with real food but they worked great with cake and ice cream.5Good forks but could use better packagingNothing wrong with the forks themselves. They seem to be pretty sturdy although the fork tines are kind of short (probably so that they don't end up snapping when you try and use it). My only complaint is that the forks arrive in plastic packaging. I'm sure all of us who are buying these forks are concerned about environmental issues, but would it really kill the manufacturers to package the forks in like cardboard or something? I feel like it's counterproductive to have these packaged in plastic.4Like eating off a tongue depressor Bought these my toddlers bday party. My goal was to have everything at our party be compostable. While these did meet that criteria, I forgot to consider texture. It was like eating off of a tongue depressor. The wood utensils stick to your tongue, dry out your mouth and make it impossible to actually enjoy the food. We were all shaking the food into our mouths from these spoons, rather than letting the utensil touch our lips or tongues. Lame. I gave it 2 stars for price and being compostable, but the product sucks. 2Wonderful, environmentally friendlyMy boyfriend likes to use disposable silverware on his nonstick cookware to avoid damaging it. I figured these compostable forks would be better in a landfill than plastic ones, and I am very pleased with them. We don't generally eat with them - they're mostly just used for stirring omelets - but one could easily do so. It's worth noting that they don't have much of a bevel to them like regular forks do, but I've not found this to negatively impact my experience. I've been able to get several uses out of one fork, so even though he uses them almost daily, we've hardly gone through a fifth of the package.I would gladly purchase these again for the same purpose, or for an outdoor event where disposable tableware would be necessary.5Much nicer than plastic. In addition to being more ecologically friendly, these forks are sturdier than plastic and add a touch of class. The only down side is that the wood can feel dry when you take your first bite. Not a big deal to me. I liked them enough to order them a second time. They are especially good for camping, where broken pieces of plastic can harm the environment. 5Does your food pair well with wood?I bring lunch to my work most days and I have been using plastic forks to eat my food. I felt bad about all of that plastic waste so I thought I would try to find something more "green". I can't really say anything about how eco-friendly these forks and some people have told me that throwing these in the trash probably isn't great for the environment either. What I can tell you is how this compares to plastic forks. The prongs of these forks are shorter than those of plastic forks. However, it is still functional and can spear your food ok. It might have an added benefit in that it can function somewhat as a spoon. It lies somewhere between fork and spork. It also feels a little shorter as well but not so much that it is a problem. The are fairly sturdy and I have only had a prong break off once. The biggest drawback using this product is that there is a certain wood flavor you can taste. I have found that some flavor combinations do not pair to well with this.If you want a disposable alternative to plastic, these are worth a try.4MehI wanted to love these, but... The good: biodegradable, for use for icing it works pretty well. For that purpose, it is superior to the plastic knives. The negative: they are useless when cutting even bread. They're kinda bulky and awkward to hold. They're kinda pricey but seem cheap.4More of a spork with negative mouth-feelWe got these for summer backyard entertaining. We wanted something biodegradable. My guests joked about needing to take the splinters out. The mouth-feel is not enjoyable. I found that I wasn't the only one using my teeth to make contact with it. The tines are rounded making it difficult to stab food. They do cut into food well. I really wanted to like these, but I dont.3These are perfect for spooning things, but not so good for eating off of......due to mouthfeel. I'm using them as dedicated dippers (in lieu of funnels) for transferring bulk spices into smaller jars. They are definitely nice-looking compared to the average wooden spoon and would be perfect, as others have suggested, to adorn a spoonable gift of something jarred or for numerous craft projects.I bought them to use as "mini-serving spoons" for samples of items some of my guests may have never tasted--e.g., quinoa--so as to not encourage them to take a huge serving! Just to have a matching set, should it be needed, likely I'll follow up and buy some forks and knifes for similar purposes, or at least to support this company that is trying to do the right thing for the environment. Worst case scenario, they'll serve as plant markers after the fact--so sort them out from the trash if you're using them in a picnic environment! If you want a spoon to eat from, buy something made from bamboo, instead. Otherwise, try these spoons :) I expect mine to last a long time if not exposed to moisture. So far, they seem quite durable compared to some plastic spoons that might break if trying to stir something a bit stiff--say, almond butter (though I haven't tried using one of these for that purpose). Also, I'll carry one/more with me in a baggie/baggies with a napkin for the times I'm in a position to offer food to the homeless along my bus route. It's an easy gesture that most can afford to share, and one we can do, with just a bit of foresight--wrap a spoon in a napkin and place in a baggie. If you have the means, add a dollar bill or a few coins. It's all good and the recipients will find joy in your generosity, which always "comes around" :)5A limerick for these birchware compostable forksThese forks are quite useful and strongand the compost thing helps them alongin your mouth they feel weird, but much less than I feared...for a party you can not go wrong4
