    Lock Malfunctioned - Warranty Is Worthless I purchased this lock 6 years ago, using it outside on my patio gate. I live in Southern California, in an area with no snow, no salt water, and relatively little rain, and so my weather is quite mild. The lock functioned fairly well for 6 years, but recently it has started malfunctioning - freezing open or closed. I've bathed it in generous amounts of WD-40 and that has helped, but it's still not functioning the way it was before it started to have issues, and I'm concerned that one day I will not be able to unlock it, and will have to call a locksmith to cut it off. So I contacted the company, CCL Security, to try to take advantage of what was advertised as a 'lifetime warranty'. Basically, the response was 'tough luck - keep using the WD-40 and hope for the best'. Not in those words, but they were not willing to replace the lock, and told me to give the WD-40 more time to work. That doesn't change the fact that I no longer trust the integrity of the lock, and am not willing to make a bet that it's not going to fail to open one day, and cost me a minimum of $65 for a locksmith visit, so I'm forced to buy a replacement. This is not a lock I can recommend. Buy at your own risk. 1Super easy to set combination, solid, heavy lock I have zero affinity and zero skill in all things mechanical. I read the directions twice and studied the illustration on the back of the package. After reading some reviews that said that people could not properly set a combination for this lock, I proceeded cautiously. The key to correctly setting a combination is to look at the illustration showing how the metal pin that comes in the package is to be pressed down into the reset hole next to the shackle. If you insert the metal pin perpendicular to either broad face of the lock the pin will not fit all the way down into its recessed hole. The loop of the pin should face outward, pointing away from the body of the lock, aligned with the thin side of the lock as shown in my photo. Press the pin all the way down until the bottom of the pin loop touches the body of the lock. Then input your chosen combination. Works like a charm! If I can correctly input a combination into this lock, anybody can. Really. 5Honestly Terrible. Had it for a couple months and the combination rollers are very stiff and worn. I've locked/unlocked less than 50 times total, using the locks (I purchased three of them) for my trailer door lock and other outdoor applications. No salt, no out-of-the-ordinary use, and they're failing on me.It took some sleuthing, but you can contact the manufacturer by calling (800) 733-8588. Expect them to transfer you to voicemail. On their website, they have a "hidden" warranty PDF (you have to search for it)...where it states a one year warranty. No mention of a lifetime warranty. Buyer Beware. 1Invitation to disaster. Poor quality. I paid a premium price for what appeared to be a premium lock for a couple gyms I go to, at least one of which has a lot of locker room theft from thieves breaking into lockers by cutting off locks (24 hr Fitness).After a couple years of service, it became stiff to open and close so I bought graphite powder which helped but recently getting stiff to open or close.Today, it was stiff to close -- and never opened again.No question about the combination. Tried push/pull, cycling through the tumblers etc. In the end, a skinny kid on gym staff cut it with bolt cutters -- like cutting through a warm stick of butter with a sharp knife. So much for "hardened steel" -- more like hardened butter.At least the company raised its price a ridiculous 25% in just 4 years (6%/year) for an inferior product no different than the cheapest locks at less than half the price.I was lucky I used it at a place with bolt cutters handy. Regardless, this cheap lock is an invitation to disaster. 1Sesamee a Great Lock When my local Lowe's store chose to stop carrying the Brinks Resettable Combination locks, and now only carried other brands resettable Letter (vs. number) combination locks our Parks Dept. was in a bit of a pickle. We had a number of these locks deployed using the same combination so that all staff could easily access the areas protected by the locks.In research, these appeared to be similar to the Brinks locks. We've found that the Brinks/Sesamee locks are considerably more weather resistant than the venerable Master 175 locks. We've used the Brinks/Sesamee around dock areas with little or no corrosion. The Master 175 corroded far more in this traditionally wet area.More disturbing was the Master 175 became unusable in areas with high concentrations of pine trees surrounding the areas where the locks were deployed. This could have been from dripping pine sap, or any number of other issues. There seemed to be significant corrosion around the dials rendering them unturnable. We had to cut off two locks over the years at the location surrounded by pine trees.The Brinks/Sesamee locks seem to have a brighter brass coating that limits corrosion. We are delighted to have found these locks on Amazon at a good price. We'll be getting more. 5resetting the combination can result in a 'lost combination' I like the concept, but be warned that if you ever decide to change the combination (as per the instructions), then you risk being permanently locked out. Basically, it works like this -- to reset the combination, you must:1) open the lock (default = 0/0/0/0)2) insert the metal pin (included)3) apply and maintain pressure to the metal pin4) set your new desired combination5) pull the pin out^ If you fail to maintain pressure throughout that entire process, then you will not succeed in setting a new combination, and your old combination will be lost. In other words, you have just created a shiny new paperweight, or a puzzle with 10,000 combinations.Despite that potential setback, I love it (5 stars), and have actually purchased several because it is 'more secure' than a standard Masterlock spin-dial combo lock. It is also faster for two reasons: 1) you cannot overshoot the number needed; 2) you can preset some of the numbers so that you only need to dial in one or two numbers. I wouldn't recommend that if you have people observing you, but you could potentially do that to save a few seconds.The shackle diameter of the K436 is 5/16", slightly thicker than the standard 1/4" of Master Lock spin-dial combination locks. The clearance is either the same or close. If for some reason shackle diameter must absolutely be 1/4", then ABUS 170/40 Laminated 3-Dial Resettable Combination Padlock is a good choice that resembles the K436, however it has 3 numbers only (not 4) and does not stop at '0' when you roll the dial back. 5Product Not As Described I've had this lock for just over a year. I used it on my outside gate based on the description that the internal mechanism was made of brass, and would not succumb to rust. However, I just attempted to open the lock, using the preset code that has been working okay for a year, and it would not disengage. I attempted to open it several times using the correct code. Finally, out of desperation, I took a hammer to the lock and it opened. I found evidence of rust on the internal mechanism which, by the way, was not made of brass. So, I sprayed it with some WD40 and it operated smoothly. Sesameee Padlocks 4Less said to use graphite in the lock. Sure, but the lock should not be described as having Solid Brass Internal Mechanism when it in fact does not! 1Internals jam and prevent opening Used on the inside of a gate in the path of the corrosive Hawaiian trade winds, brass is the 2nd best material after stainless steel. I couldn't find a combination all stainless lock (including shank). The 4-digit combination provides convenience over a keyed lock for a high traffic gate, and the lock isn't subject to constant vibration from being on a vehicle and subject to inadvertent changing of the combo (the biggest complaint from all the "1" and "2" ratings).The reduced security from a brass shank (vs hardened steel) and the possibility of someone trying all 9999 combinations is negated by using this lock on the inside of my property. Hardened steel will eventually rust where I live.All 4 dials spin in either direction, but you can't pass zero in the negative direction. When the correct combo is set, the lock doesn't automatically spring open, so someone can't just spin-spin-spin all 9999 numbers. They have to spin-pull-spin-pull, much more effort. Once it is pulled open it will automatically spring open if you attempt to close it with the correct combo set. However, you can immediately spin all the combo dials after it is opened, so I don't understand one reviewer's complaint that he wanted to hang the lock opened without giving away the combo.Fine print on packaging says periodically lube with graphite. Do not use oil. Maybe that's what I have been doing wrong with my other locks?Update 12/29/17 - I didn't believe all the complaints of no "open sesemee", but in only a matter of months it happened to me. After a couple months with no action, I needed to open my gate, set the combo, but it didn't open. I tried several times, resetting the combo and trying every number nearby. I double checked the combo against another lock set with the same combo.I figured the internals were jammed so I sprayed silicone lube in every crevice I could find, including the dials. I slapped it against the gate a few times to free things up, but to no avail. I repeated the process 3 times (lube, slap, retry spinning the dials). I started cutting the shank with my Dremel not knowing that I still had the combo set, and when I was almost through the lock sprang open. Thus, my rating went from 5 stars to 1 star, only because I couldn't give it zero stars.A few more points about this lock. Referring to the attached photo, it only took me about 30 seconds with my Dremel to cut through about 80-90% of the shank. Very soft brass.The right side of the shank is still shiny brass (more or less), but the left side is noticeably more corroded with the green stuff just starting. The tip of shank's left side that was inserted into the lock has a copper color. Also notice how ugly the body looks. This is only about 8 months in a humid environment about 1 mile from the ocean.I had a stainless steel lanyard attached to the top of the shank so that the lock could hang when the gate was opened. Before I bought this I asked a metallurgist friend of mine if stainless coupled to brass would cause galvanic corrosion. He asked me what type of brass? I didn't know. He asked me what type of stainless? The normal 304 I replied. He said it might. This is the only reason I can think of that would cause one side of the shank to corrode more severely than the other. I concluded from the conversation that not all brass is created equal. The lock is stamped "Taiwan". 1Unreliable combination set, failure and corrosion I bought 2 of these and one of the same with chrome plating for use in a marine (not submerged but on a boat moored in salt water). I expected to keep them somewhat protected and felt these likely better to handle corrosion risk that others. The locks are heavy, look strong, and likely difficult to break, perfect.First my relevant experience w/ the locking mechanism, which attractively is programmed by the user to selected code. Using the provided tool, my first set went perfectly.Problem #1: I went on to the second lock, same procedure, locked it and... it would not unlock. After many attempts at combinations that might have been hit en route to my selected number I gave up. I was still sure I did something wrong until later.The third lock set to appropriate numbers first time, no problems.Problem #2, In use, I found the numbers on first lock used became quickly obscured and difficult to read as a result of surface corrosion which arose in just a couple weeks. The rollers got stiff, and I lost confidence I could open it when I came back. I switched out the lock and it's positioning to a more protected place (using a longer cable).The numbers still looked fine a week later, no visible corrosion but...Problem #3: The lock would not budge. This one had no corrosion. No visible defect. I tried everything short of cutting it off. The combo worked fine when I put it there, but would not release. No corrosion, just locked. Tried going off the number and back to it multiple times, no joy.Came back next day to try to cut it off but tried again a couple times, no different technique, but it popped open!I reproduced the unexpected locking jam/failure to unlock a couple more times and decided the mechanism was unreliable.I strongly recommend these not be trusted when you may need to gain access to your locked item. I was very disappointed because I trusted the positive reviews, manufacturer website and expected application guidance. 1Ease of use and corrosion resistance in constant salt spray Great lock used in a commercial application where I had guests renting my beach condo for 2 years. I used two of these locks on a locker under our building where beach chairs and equipment were stored. We don't have direct salt water exposure but we are located about 100 yards from shore and we get a lot of salt spray and tons of daily use. The lock combination has successfully been changed several times over the 2 year period. The lock is not exposed to any sort of rainfall that would remove salt buildup. Air conditioner cabinets exposed to the same environment for similar periods of time have developed significant corrosion. I biannually spray a little silicone surface treatment (Blakemore's Real Magic) on it to clean and lubricate it. They continue to operate well. The brass body has tarnished and the neck has a little surface corrosion but nothing significant. I would purchase these again. 5
