    Great bit. Very worth it.This bit is a champ. Use it on PT lumber and it chews through with no issues. No smoking or jamming on low speed.If you go all the way through - your plugs will push up into the bit and eventually fly out. Easier to stop short and pop or cut them out.5Plugs are 5/16, not 3/8I had no trouble cutting plugs, but they are only 5/16 in diameter and fit very loose in a 3/8 hole. I was surprised that no one else mentioned this problem in their reviews which makes me wonder if I could be doing something wrong, but 3/8 is 3/8, not 5/16. Measuring the diameter, they are 5/16, but I cut several plugs to verify and drilled a hole using a 3/8 drill bit as a test. The fit was extremely loose in the hole.2Perfect for pocket hole plugs!!Wowww. I am amazed at the quality of this bit, and at this price. It is extremely sharp. And mine came in the original cmt orange tool package. I was expecting some knockoff junk. But this bit will be around for a while if handled with care. I bought it to make some pocket hole plugs with the same wood i used for a project. I use the kreg k5 pocket hole master system. When i saw kreg sold a plug cutter for like 80$ i was thinking there has to be a way to do it without their little piece of plastic accessory. I literly tried everything. Although the dowel trick did work pretty well at keeping the costs down, it didnt match the wood good enough for me (nobody sells grade d select pine dowels). I was able to make perfect pocket hole plugs with this. And if i make one the whole length of this bit, once i cut it off the rest of it is long enough to plug a second hole! Perfect all the way around. Im going to buy a second just to keep in package and use in 5 years when i have this original one sharpened.5a remarkable plug cutter I have used the cheap plug cutters over the years and they work OK. This one produces perfect plugs with very smooth sides so that the glue joint is nearly invisible. Caution though as the board needs to be well secured as it may get away from you. The bit is very sharp and could do a lot of damage if not properly handled. It's a great product though. 5it was like cutting butter I ordered these by mistake because I don't have a drill press. But just for the heck of it, I tried it with my router at the lowest setting. Even so, the router was spinning at a much fast rate than a drill press, so I didn't get a straight shot when plunging down (couldn't hold the router in place). However, once the bit cuts the top part of the work piece and I plunge the router down to the full depth, it was like cutting butter! When I cut out the plug, the bottom portion of the plug was extremely nice and smooth. I'd say this is a great cutter. Might buy a drill press just for this. 5Very good plug cutter Very good plug cutter. It has the operating instructions (the speed of the cutter for hard and soft wood). However, after I adjusted my drill press to the lowest speed (550 rpm) I still had burnt plugs. I realized and experimented with the feed speed. Finally, I used a very slow feed rate (about 30 sec for making a plug on 1/4" cherry plank). I made about 50 plugs and the tool is still very sharp. I do not like that the outer diameter of the cut is almost 1" for the plug being 1/2". I would give a 4.4 stars (since the instruction does not suggest the feed rate to be very slow, especially for hard wood and because it takes almost 1" of the wood to make an 1/2" plug). However, I will round it up to 4 stars. 4Makes great plugs and lots of wood chips!I bought two of these as I had about 4000 plugs to cut. Half way done and the first cutter hasn't slowed down. I'm cutting Kayu batu (an Indonesian hard wood) so I'd say the cutter is fairly durable. Unlike some plug cutters, this one does not make a beveled end. But the trade off is a good one in my case. I can use one of the cut plugs to fill 3 or 4 holes. Also, since I'm using small bench belt sander to make a small bevel on the plug, the bevel can be shallow to maximize plug wall contact with the hole.Diameter of cut plug is from .380" to .385" (probably affected by whatever drying is occurring in the plugs I just measured (cut a couple of weeks ago) so figure 10 thousandths over as a good guess. They drive in snugly in a .375 (3/8") hole.5Get what you pay forReally like this plug cutter. The cheap plug cutters are worthless after only a few holes and most of those were burned too. This cutter as no such issue. After a couple 100 holes still cutting away as intended. Does create a massive amount of chips but the quality of the plug is great and true. Will buy the other offered sizes as needed.5After cutting several hundred plugs these are still cutting good clean plugs These are outstanding plug cutters! Cheaper plug cutters are fine for a few dozen plugs but for more you need this plug cutter. I've been plugging(100+) nail holes in some old growth heart-pine which is very hard and often sappy wood and this bit is cutting clean strait plugs every time using a drill press. I've also used it to cut a 100 or so plugs in some salvaged old-growth cypress which is much softer and again it cut good clean plugs without issue. If you need longer plugs(over 1/2"), then these plug cutters are your only real choice. I've gone through several cheaper plug cutters until I found these, now I don't have to keep buying new plug cutters. 5Nice plug cutter - works great I bought this part to make plugs to hide joinery on a table I am building, and this too worked great - seriously.Sure, I could have bought plugs, but I wanted the plugs to come from the same wood I was using so it matched more closely.Verdict - this tool made perfect round plugs.I was using Ipe Wood, which is a really strong/hard wood, and I was surprised that it cut through the wood so easily.The hollow area in the middle of the tool makes it easy for extracting the plug.For plugs cut out of 3/4" wood, put some tape around the hollow area, or the plug will fly out of the hole. 5A workhorse of a plug cutterBought this to cut red oak plugs to hide screws on the wall section of unfinished 3/4 thick red oak flooring. Plug cutter from Lowes croaked after less than a couple of dozen plugs that were oversize to start with. This cutter just keeps on keeping on. I've cut several hundred so far. I find that when I cut plugs by cutting all the way through a scrap flooring piece, I soon have a pile of plugs mixed with chips on the drill press table. This cutter does cut a huge hole to get the 3/8" plug. It is easier to set the drill press stop to cut almost all the way through and when the board is pimpled with plugs, to take it to the band saw and set the scrap piece against the rip fence and cut the plugs free. Good plugs if a bit loose. They glue in place easily and a chisel will split most of them off with enough height left to plug another hole. Plug cutting is boring (Oops! Pardon the pun) and repetitious but at least this plug cutter turns out good plugs and so far is still sharp. By the nature of the job, a good deal of friction occurs between the plug and inside of the cutter. Beware of overheating that might ruin the cutter. This cutter cuts many more plugs than the Lowes cutter before getting hot. When I need a different size plug, I'll buy another CMT.5Good Value. I use this "plug" cutter to make 3-inch-long dowels. It works. You can take scraps of wood, clamp them vertically on your drill press table, and cut multiple dowels, thereby matching your base wood, or having your dowels lighter/darker than your base wood. I shopped around for price and availability. This plug cutter is great and the best design I've used. Don't skimp on big box store plug cutters that are, inexplicably, open on one side of the cutter head as they will invariably wobble and mar the wood grain. As long as this cutter remains sharp, it operates superbly. Mount to a drill press and get after it.Highly recommend this product.I'm a high end custom home builder and craftsman. 5The 5/8 in shank on this was really a problem ...The 5/8 in shank on this was really a problem. Trying to find a drill press or a drill that would handle it was quite a pain in the backside. Lots of drills say 5/8 in but they do not expand large enough to handle this shank. I was able to eventually find a drill press at Harbor Freight that would handle it, but the drill press could not provide enough torque to cut through wood. Even with the bare minimum of down pressure the belts on the drill press would slip and I eventually wound up using a screwdriver through the hole to twist it by hand to generate the plug that I needed. Although I can't knock the quality of the produced bit, you need to have essentially a commercial grade drill press to use it. The bit however was sharp and cut cleanly.4Good quality tool. Got the job done quickly. This CMT 1/2" plug cutter is a nice item. Run it about 950rpm and it goes through pressure treated pine like it's nothing. No smoke, no noise, just smooth cutting. I made 100+ plugs and it still cuts like I just took it out of the box.Sure ended up with a lot of sawdust though. 5Wonderful tool for the restorer. I've been using this tool - and - other CMT Plug Cutters - to cut plugs for antique furniture repair. It is especially valuable for those instances where chair or stool legs have broken - and - one needs to drill out the broken pieces and to plug the hole. I've also used it with great success in doing the same for chair stretches - drilling out the broken piece - plugging - then turning on a lathe to make an almost invisible repair. Indispensable for antique furniture repair. You might not need it often - but - when you do - nothing else will work. So - go ahead and make some sawdust. Enjoy! 5The best Bung Cutters on the market.As a Master Carpenter in my 43rd year, I have tried a lot of bung cutters.The Fullers seem to be the one everyone uses.The Fullers fail miserably when cutting hardwood bungs, they heat up and are smoking after the fifth or sixth bung.I have cut over 100 White Oak bungs with the CMT and they are only lukewarm.Of course speed setting on the drill press and allowing the tool to do the cutting have a lot to do with it.I will NEVER use any other bung cutter.5It cut an excellent plug but not the right sizeReceived this plug cutter and tried it out. I ordered a 3/8" plug cutter and even though the stamp on the shank said it was a 3/8" cutter, it was a 5/16" cutter. It cut an excellent plug but not the right size. I wonder if I reorder the plug cutter I will get another 5/16" cutter!!1
