Customer Reviews

Exceeded expectations for making a professional combo shower head We recently bought a house that desperately needed new shower fixtures. I wanted a rain head but also wanted the convenience of a handheld . After searching and not being happy with what was available, I decided to build my own setup. I purchased the following 5 items and reused the original shower arm, just turned upward.Pasco 7103-C 1/2-Inch Brass Coupling, ChromeKingston Brass K117C1 17-Inch Shower Arm, Polished ChromeDelta U4920PK 3-Way Shower Arm Diverter with Hand Shower Mount, ChromeDelta Faucet 75700 Universal Showering Components 7-Setting Handshower, ChromeAKDY (TM) Bathroom Chrome Shower Head 8" AZ6021 Rain StyleThe Pasco Brass Coupler was very well engineered and connected the shower arm to diverter beautifully. The diverter appears to be metal and strong enough to hold the weight of the arm and 8" Rain Style shower head. I will say that the selector arm does feel a little flimsy compared the heft of the rest of the diverter. The shower arm was the perfect length and the hump and angle worked out perfectly, even when angled up 45degrees like I installed it. The 8" Rain Style shower head is the star of this show. It is very nice looking and flows water exactly how I wanted it too. To complete the package, the 7-setting hand shower is great for rinsing those hard to reach places, cleaning the shower or washing the dog. The best part is that I did all this for less than many of the other inferior "out of the box" options. All in all I am very happy this design and all the products. I have attached a few pictures in the customer photos section to help make sense of it all. 5Premium quality divertor Shower diverters are the easiest and least expensive way to modify your shower and add to your shower's convenience and luxury. Unscrew your shower head, screw the loose nut of the diverter onto shower arm, screw the shower head back to a second exposed fitting on this diverter, and a new flexible hose/shower head to the last exposed fitting of the diverter, and voila! You're in business.Don't get cheap, though. The flyweight diverters you can buy at the local home stores or here at Amazon will only frustrate you. Easily stripped, and easily broken, you'll be convinced you're a clod. It's not you. You get what you pay for. This heavy weight, smooth operating accessory exudes quality. Amazon's price is fair and you will be pleased by the jewelry quality of this Delta diverter. The 3 position "switch" on the diverter is the nicest approach I've seen to changing from the main shower head, to a mix, to the handheld shower head. It works smoothly and reliably, promising a long use life. 5About 1/8 inch of threads to attach to the pipe. This is a good solid unit with one ridiculous flaw. The threading to attach it to the pipe in the wall is just an eighth of an inch with the washer in. It's a quarter inch without the washer, but it will leak. So I could either deal with a leaking shower head that actually stayed in place, or a shower head that just doesn't have enough grip to support it's own weight. That little nut you see in the picture is what you attach it to the pipe with. Inside the nut is the rubber washer and it's own attachment to the rest of the unit. What's left for you is 1/8 an inch.If you somehow can get enough grip on your pipe to hold itself up, then you'll have to cut your Teflon tape accordingly. About an eighth inch wide should do it so you don't see it sticking out beyond the fitting. Then, all you'll have to worry about is the unsightly 3/4 of an inch of threading that is still left visible on your pipe. For such a clean looking and elegant shower fitting, I cannot find a way to make this look remotely good in a shower. It just looks ridiculous. Though, it doesn't really matter in the end, because it has zero functionality and I returned it after about two hours of trying everything I could think of to get it to actually stay on the pipe without leaking or falling of once I turned the water on. 2Nice quality diverter, some plastic, a little pricey but lifetime warranty SUMMARYIt's a mostly high quality part. Much nicer than the $18 all plastic ones at the big box stores. The valve itself is metal, as is the nut that connects to the shower rod. The selector switch/arm is plastic, and so is the hand shower bracket. It is twice the price, and would be nice at almost $40 if the whole part was metal. -1 star on value/quality for the price. But overall it's the nicest diverter valve with hand shower support that I have found. I also have Delta fixtures so the finish is an exact match in the SS. If you don't need the hand shower support built into the valve, there is anotehr part -- the U4929 - that has the same valve without that support piece.PROS- metal construction of valve body/valve/shower arm nut- good fit for Delta hand shower mount- when properly installed, it is a firm tight fit that doesn't rotate out of position- overall better quality than the big box store off brand diverter valves that are all plastic- lifetime warranty -- call Delta if it breaks and they will send you a new one or parts to fix it.CONS- price is still for a part that still has a lot of plastic. They probably assume they will be sending a 2nd one to some fraction of the original buyers.- plastic switch/selector arm- plastic hand shower mountTIPS- Tape all 3 threaded parts with teflon tape - about 3-5 wraps. wrap clockwise so when you thread the nut onto the fitting, it doesn't unwind the teflon tape.- Hand tighten first, then use a crescent wrench (not pliers!!!) and wrap a cotton rag (like a piece of an old T-shirt) around the nut. Tighten until the valve body does not rotate. If you use pliers or any wrench with "teeth" you will mar the nut, most likely even if you wrap it. Be careful not to overtighten - go slow. If you figure out where it is fully tight, then loosen off slightly, rotate the body slightly counter clockwise and then tighten to the correct angle, it will be tight, won't leak, and will stay in place. Once correctly installed, it is very firm and won't rotate when you adjust your shower head or grab the hand shower.- Remember your Delta parts are lifetime warranty. You never need to buy repair parts or replace them if you will only call them. I suggest you keep a file with part numbers...it is very helpful when they later change finishes, etc.I have read that people had problems with the whole body turning to the right when the hand shower is in place. If this happens to you, the nut that attaches to the shower arm is not tight enough. When that nut is properly tightened, the valve body does not rotate. 4Just installed it and I really like it. It replaces a diverter that was integrated ... Just installed it and I really like it. It replaces a diverter that was integrated into the handle of a hand-held shower head that was just too hard to operate, the AquaCare by HotelSpa 36-Setting Shower-Head / Handheld Shower Combo. But this diverter is solid. it is NOT plastic and the switch is easy to manipulate. In my shower configuration, this 3-way diverter allows me to switch from the main shower head to the hand-held, or the third way, both the main and the hand held shower heads. It works great and does what it is supposed to while looking great and taking care of a problem that I needed to have solved. Highly recommended. 5Stupid design, but basically works. It basically works. It lets you switch between all-X, all-Y, or half-and-half. If you want, say, 75% X (especially useful if X and Y have different flow rates under the same pressure), too bad.But the control switch's axis of motion is at 45 degrees to the axis of the screw threads that fasten it to the water pipe. This means that every time you flip the switch, you are trying to screw/unscrew the faucet. That means that you can't keep it tight, and it won't stay at the correct orientation, unless you glue it in place or something... That's really frustrating, and really bad design. You can minimise this by using two hands--one to flip the lever and the other to hold the faucet still. Ugh. 2Just what i was looking for for upgraded master shower I wanted to upgrade the master shower fixtures to have both a rain shower head and handheld also. After doing some research, I didn t see anything that I liked in an existing kit. So after more research, I was able to assemble the configuration shown in the attached picture, which came close to what I wanted. These are the components that I used: - American Standard 3-inch shower arm with escutcheon - Delta Faucet 3-way Shower Arm Diverter - Vida Alegria REACH Solid Brass 18-inch High Flow Overhead Rain Shower Arm Extension - LumoSpa Rainfall Shower Head - BOPai Vacuum Suction Cup with Swivel Adjustable Shower Head Holder - Delta 5-spray H20 Kinetic Handheld Shower with Hose. All components were ordered/delivered from Amazon, except the Delta H2O Kinetic Handheld Shower which I bought from Lowes.Since I didn t like the downward-angled look of the existing standard shower arm, I replaced it with a 3-inch straight arm, to which I connected the Delta 3-way Shower Diverter. Then I connected the Alegria REACH extension. And finally I attached the LumoSpa Rainfall Shower Head. I used a good amount of Teflon tape on the threads of each connection, and carefully threaded on each component, and tried to not overtighten each. I overtightened the shower head, and it leaked (as was noted in some reviews); but after reapplying Teflon tape, threading it back on, hand tightened it, then just tightened a little more with a wrench (and cloth to prevent scratches), no more leaks. Everything went together easily, and I liked the end result shown in the attached picture, and it gives the master shower a definite upgraded spa look and feel. The main star components that made it work, both for mechanical soundness and the look, are the 3-inch shower arm, the Delta diverter, and the Vida Alegria 18-inch extension arm. I was a little concerned about the stress that would be placed on the wall-shower arm and diverter-extension arm connections, but all the components are solidly designed and constructed. There are a number of nice rainfall shower heads which could be used as long as it s compatible with the available amount of water pressure.Even though the Delta diverter has a slot for a handheld, I didn t like the look of the handheld up in it. So I got the BOPai vacuum suction holder so far it s holding the handheld showerhead well after 3 days. I cleaned the tile with an alcohol wipe before attaching it, and will see how long it holds. There s also a sticky pad which could be used, if needed.Since my water pressure isn t the greatest, I chose the Lumospa Shower Head instead of a larger 12-inch rainfall head. And it works and looks great. I initially took out the water restrictor from the Lumospa Shower Head, and liked the heavy drenching that resulted. But as was noted by another reviewer, the water flow seems a little heavier than really needed, so I reinserted the water restrictor. The result is adequate water flow, but it left me wishing for a little more. So I m still debating whether it s worth the trouble to drill a larger hole in the water restrictor .but I m also sometimes known to be a perfectionist. I m also tempted to try a larger 12-inch rainfall shower head, but keep telling myself that it s good enough as is. 5Great diverter for Rain Shower head and handheld head. I recently ordered a 12", square, LED, Rain shower head thru Amazon. I connected it using a Danze D481170, curved, 13" flexible shower arm to my existing Delta diverter that was part of the dual shower head I had purchased at a local Big-Box store a couple of years earlier. After about 30 days, the original diverter sheared off at the base of the fixed shower head threaded pipe. It was then I noticed the old diverter was made of plastic with a metal foil as the exterior. I went on a long quest of finding a replacement diverter as the wife and I both liked having the handheld shower head to finish our shower and rinse off the walls and did not want to drill holes in the shower wall to mount a hand held holder. The diverters that appeared to be strong enough (my rain shower head and extension arm weighed a bit over 5 lbs.) could not operate both at the same time, would not hold the handheld head and/or were the push button type that are harder to operate with wet/soapy hands. I tried another diverter that had all the features I wanted, a Speakman VS-113 and was assured by a vendor that it would handle the weight, well it lasted 5 minutes shearing off just behind the wall connection nut as it was almost all plastic. I saw the version U4929-SS-PK without the hand held shower head holder and almost ordered. But first, I called Delta to see if the product was all brass and could handle the weight. The customer service rep told me he had actually seen the U4929 model in class and it would handle the heaviest shower head Delta had. I asked if they had a version that had the handheld holder and he directed me to this one, the U4920-SS-PK which was available on Amazon. Crossed my fingers and ordered from Amazon. Arrived quickly and first I weighed it on a scale -- 10 ounces, my old, identical looking Delta diverter, weighed 4.2 ounces. This one felt much sturdier and a little tapping gave me the sense it was all brass (with a possible exception of the flipper arm, not sure there). Installed within minutes and immediately noticed that it felt much better, looked stronger and no bending as witnessed with the other ones. Have had it installed for 2 days now and will update after 30 (the longest time my other tries have lasted). Besides, it has a lifetime warranty from Delta, but I will keep my old Delta one that broke as it works with the hand held, just not the stationary head part. 5FATAL DESIGN FLAW The solid metal build, finish, & operation is 5 star. However it has a fatal design flaw. It connects to the shower arm with a friction nut. Your seal is a 1/8 inch gasket on the end of a hollow pipe which moves with using the connection for the hose mounted shower head , a fatal design flaw that WILL LEAK. Better to buy , The Delta single function diverter ,and install a wall mount shower hose and head holder. You need a solid closed connection that is fixed for connection to the shower arm. 1Overall it worked, but could be frustating, design could be improved. I had issues with this diverter, I had to re-do the installation 3-4 times because it just kept leaking from several places, the connector to your wall tube has a bronze hex shape nut or something to that effect it has a beveled shape in it so when you try to get the nut tight to your tube it makes the rubber washer curl into a conical shape so it goes inside the tube instead of maintaining a flat shape and making a good solid seal, I had to pry the washer from inside the wall tube a few times, the entire assembly just spins around and leaks all over. I managed to get it tight on the last attempt, here is what I recommend if you are having the same issues. Make sure you have plenty of thread tape, go around the wall pipe at least 6-8 times so is thick, make sure you use an Allen wrench to get that hex nut inside the diverter tight if is loose, and try to get better rubber washers because the one included aren't so great. Delta has been around around for a long time and it's my favorite brand, but sometimes their designs could be better. 2
