Quality decreasing on this oneI bought this to replace the identical item and part number from 2014. This 2017-18 version feels like softer/weaker/lighter aluminum material for the barrel. The magnet fell off within a few weeks so I'll need to repair that. The carbide scribe point seems fine for now but it only gets used on wood 90% of the time. I will not purchase this product from here or General again. I would have paid a more for a better product that didn't seem to have caved to the almighty profitability god. Now we know.2Fine point!Wow, the picture doesn't do this justice. It's much more precise than I imagined from looking at the pictures. Don't spend more if you don't have to, this scribe works awesome. I almost paid multiples more because it didn't look like a very fine point... it's MUCH better than expected. Totally served my purpose.5Extremely poor qualityTerrible!I scored 3 glass bottles before I noticed the thing wasn't working the same. After examining the tip I saw that it was ruined. It appears as though it is made of a soft material that was destroyed by scraping on glass, even though this falls under the advertised materials!1Very nice scribe!Light enough to carry in pocket all day. Sharp, hard, point. Good strong magnet for general purpose (don't put it next to your cell phone or HDD). Pen styling makes it great to hold and make precision scribes. If I lose or it get's stollen I'll buy another one. Very good quality IMHO. Enjoy!5Good scribe tips, poor retention of the magnet. The scribe tip itself works great and the magnet is very strong, but maybe to strong. The magnet pulled out of the top of both of the units I purchased when I pulled it off my workbench. Luckily, they are magnets, so they just stayed stuck to the surface and I was able to pull them of and just glued them back in. 3Carbide scribe with replaceable tip.I like this scribe because you can replace the tip with a worn out 1/8" carbide cutter, after you Grind it to a point. If you have the right grinding wheel. And it's solid carbide. Make use of anything that's worn out if you can.5Does a great job. This definitely does the job of scribing. Wish it had a way to protect the point other than the very tight rubber tube that come with. Whenever I pull the rubber protector off, it's so tight that the whole point comes out of its housing, even though I've tightened it as much as a pair of pliers can do. So I'll just have to keep it someplace where it can't scratch anything important.4NOT the same CM-88 General scriber sold a decade ago!I own an engineering business and have been using the CM-88 General carbide scribers in construction and maintenance for decades. The General scribers were well made until they outsourced them to China. If you look closely, the pictures on the Amazon page show two different scribers. The one in the package is produced in China. It has an altered part number(88CM) and is absolute junk. The machining is poor, enough so that the points fall right out of the chuck. We voiced our complaints directly to the uninterested staff at General, who reluctantly replaced all of our defective units with a box of new ones. All of the replacements were just as bad, and we ended up tossing the whole lot. We now use Starrett scribers, which are more expensive, but are well made and they work.1High Value with a Handy Magnetic EndUsually I steer clear of GENERAL brand items, but the price was so good, I decided to get one. It is QUITE sharp, and helps make very accurate scribe lines. The magnet on mine is almost flush, unlike the picture. The magnet is an extra handy feature. Have not scribed yards and yards of lines, so cannot speak to longevity of sharpness, but in short term works very well.5To all those who said made in China.Made in the USA!!! I was so relieved to see the letters U S A stamped into these scribe pens after all the negative reviews I read. General must have gotten their stuff together because this is a solid tool. Sharp tip, lightweight but solid construction. Can't ask for more under 6 bucks!5very nice scribe....i love to etch artistically ...this ..so far..is working fine....hope it does not dull easy...i'll repost if it does.....only comes with one removable tip....magnet is fairly strong and sure does work...almost annoyingly so when other pens clasps stick to it very easily.....i really like it so far....i am using it on plastic sheets and objects i worry will be stolen....5
