If you like whisky, get a set of these glasses. After seeing these glasses on The Whisky Vault YouTube channel, I decided to purchase a set. I had been drinking out of a standard rocks glass for years. The glassware is very high quality and a pleasure to hold. I bought these expecting to just improve the enjoyment of the smell of the whisky. However, I was surprise by how much the flavor intensified, and not just the nose. My guess is that this is due to both the more intense smell created by the tulip shape, and the smaller mouth of the glass. If you are a whisky drinker and don't have a set of these, you really are missing out. 5They do, in fact, live up the hype I am no master whisky taster, nor am I a snob. I'm a firm believer in whisky as an everyman's drink, but at the same time I appreciate it as a craft worthy of considerable study and capable of great nuance. How anyone chooses to enjoy it is up to the individual, and you'll get no argument from me on what you like and how you want to drink it. Want to mix Scotch, red wine, and orange juice together in a Collins glass with ice and chug in down? Cheers! Now, that said, when it comes to my own enjoyment of beverages, I'm very particular about glassware. I both love the material and appreciate what it can do for the senses. It all begins with the look, and the feel in the hand. Just as I like a delicate and tall fluted glass for a sparkling wine, I like a nice heavy glass when I drink spirits, just not something so overbuilt as to get in the way. For look a feel, I haven't yet found glassware I like better than the Glencairn for whisky. The heavy base lets it feel sturdy in the hand, while staying low on the table and letting you pick it up to look through the liquid without your hand getting in the way. The glass itself is elegant without being pretentious and overly complicated. In due time, I believe it will become far more commonplace and universally understood to be the unique glassware for whisky as recognizable as wine glasses are today.Besides being very attractive and unmistakably a glass for complex spirits and not anything else, the tulip shape above the base allows for a nice quick swirl, and concentrates the aromas for when you want to stick your nose in the glass, a nostril at a time so you don't overwhelm your sense of smell. There is a way to do this without being totally awkward, although it might take a bit of practice. I also recommend relaxing your jaw and keeping your mouth open while you do this, just a little bit. Depending on your sense of smell, you may or may not smell things you never have before in your favorite whiskies, but it is undeniable that the aroma is stronger in a glass of this shape. As the sense of smell is so important to how things taste, I would say that Glencairns are worth it on that basis alone.Drinking out of a Glencairn is not particularly social. You will be hard pressed to maintain eye contact with somebody across a table while you take a sip, which is arguably the biggest downside to a glass like this. The upside is that by breaking your eye line you are forced to concentrate more on the drink itself. The shape of the glass again aids in the flavor of the drink by directing aromas towards your nose as you drink from it. I won't pretend to know how the shape of the glass affects the flow of the liquid itself, or what, if any, benefit that might make. There are other attempts at an "official" whisky glass out there. I will leave it up to you to decide if any of them are better at enhancing the whisky-drinking experience, but knowing a thing or two about glass and how it's made, I expect the Glencairn to ultimately win more hearts and minds. For one, it is a very simple design, lending itself to easier manufacture and greater durability. Two, because of that simplicity, it is and will always be cheaper, thus will not be so easily painted as glassware for snobs, driving adoption by "regular" people. I fully expect that the Glaincairn will be widely imitated, with perhaps minor future variations improving it slightly. Clearly the Glencairn is a winner, and does exactly what it set out to do. 5Very nice glass, but THIN I like these glasses a lot. BUT, they are so thin. Doesn't seem it would take much to crack or break one. Quite a bit different from the scotch glasses and snifters they use at a pub. Those are noticeably thicker glass. Looks like you could drop one of those on the floor and it would not break. But these look like they would break or crack by bumping other glasses in your dishwasher. On the other hand, if they weren't easily breakable, how would the company get you to keep buying them to replace broken ones? If they were thick and strong, I'd give them 5 stars. 4Needs better quality control. Glencairn glasses are great choice for whiskey tasting, and I've been using it for quite a while. However, they need to step up their quality control. My recent purchase has a flawed glass with looks like a burst air bubble, and it left sharp edges outside (indicated by the white circle) 2Exactly What I Wanted Still pondering the purchase? I say go for it! I ordered these after seeing Ralfy on ralfy.com (YouTube whiskey guy--look him up) using his. I later saw one of these left at my local World Market. I wanted four, but six was better, so I ordered this set. I got the box about half an hour ago. I was a bit worried that I'd get a broken one or two, but they survived the shipping and delivery stages just fine. After giving two to my mom for her bar, I washed one for me and proceeded to pour a "wee dram" of my favorite brandy, Torres 10--not the greatest ever, but a great buy for the price. The tasting experience is WAY different than in my brandy snifter. For starters, I got a lot more fruit than usual. I won't bore folks with the other tasting notes; I'm not that good, anyway. I'll just say that I can't wait to try other things in this kind of glass. They're not large glasses. For those who don't know, you put an amount similar to two or three shots in at a time, up to about the middle of the convex part (the part that curves out). You can swirl it a little, but mostly just let it breathe. Then have a sniff, followed by a small sip. It's definitely an improvement over a highball glass. Enjoy! :) 5Nice glass Package came in perfect state, the product that I received was original and it had the Glencairn name etched on the bottom of the glass (see photos). I really liked it, it definitely enhances the tasting experience. 5Good for whisk(e)y tasting! These glasses are great if you're into whisk(e)y tasting. They are the best glasses for smelling and tasting the different notes of individual whisk(e)ys. I would recommend these glasses if you prefer your whisk(e)y neat. If you prefer it on the rocks you may want to go with something a little different. I hope all you whisk(e)y lovers have a Magnificent day! 5Beautiful glass adds to the drinking experience. I absolutely love these whiskey glasses. I've never used a dedicated glass for my bourbon before and I'm very happy I bought these. They bring a new level of enjoyment to sipping...the smell of the drink is more concentrated and that adds to the enjoyment. The glass is flawless, it's heavy on the bottom so it feels good in the hand and they're just the right size.I worried a bit when I first started using them as the seem extremely delicate. But they've held up quite well and I haven't had any break so far, even after several cycles thru the dishwasher.I highly recommend these glasses. Even if you're a novice bourbon/whiskey drinker like me you'll get increased enjoyment using one of these quality glasses. 5Great gift for high-end drinkers I ordered these for as part of a Valentines Day gift for my husband, to go with a nice bottle of bourbon. He started drinking bourbons recently because he has several friends that also enjoy bourbons. I thought these would be nice so when they get together they can have proper tastings. I originally saw these glasses on another site paired with a decanter, I always thought the "correct" glass for bourbons and scotch was a rocks glass, so I started looking into these glasses. They were developed to mimic the tasting glasses that the makers of the spirits use, so it makes sense they are the preferred glass for tasting. The shape is to contain the "nose" of the spirit which is important for taking because in aged spirits much of the taste is contained in the nose. The tulip lip is to thinly place the liquid on the tip of your tongue to pick up subtle notes. These are not for serving "on the rocks" but could be used with a splash of water, which is preferred with some spirits to open up the taste. These glasses come shipped very well and are all in an individual box. They have nice weight to them, not heavy like a rocks glass, but more like a wine glass which, I believe, is so you can swirl the spirits. I know some bourbons require some air, especially some of the higher proofed/long aged types, to improve the initial taste. I think these glasses are lovely and elegant and will sit right in our bar next to our expensive Riedel wine glasses. Do not hesitate to order these for your whiskey/scotch/bourbon drinker. Please note on this option you can choose your quantity- the more you order the less expensive they are per item, so if you need 2 gifts order more and split them because they are packaged individually. If this review has been helpful to you, please click yes below, Thanks 5Perfect whiskey glasses I've been a pretty avid whiskey drinker for the at least the last 15 years, and over the last 5 or so my tastes have become more refined. I've drank whiskey out of bottles, jars, and just about every glass available, and I have to say that these are the best way I've found. These glasses give you the best nose of any glass I've used and really provide an opportunity to explore the differences between different whiskeys. So far I've had rye, bourbon, and clear corn out of the glasses, and all were more enjoyable out of these glasses. The glasses are solid and study and nicely made, and I'm confident they will hold up to significant use and occasionally being knocked over. I highly recommend these glasses. 5
