Customer Reviews

Great product, even better customer service! Ok, I can't say enough good about this product, or the company itself. I am using my man cave to test-pilot some home automation before moving the concepts out to the rest of the house. The Lutron Caseta systems have come up in just about every conversation I've had with people who have done similar things in their homes. Let me tell you my story.I have basically built my own room in my house for a home theater/man cave... Floor to ceiling, wiring and cabling, etc... I got some dimmable LED recessed lights from Lowe's fully expecting to put in some type of Lutron dimmer switch in there at some point. When these lights worked on a standard flip-style switch, they worked fine. However, when I put a dimmer switch on, the lights would never turn off fully. I tried a few different brands and models of dimmer switches before trying the Lutron Caseta. When I first installed the caseta switch, I was disappointed to see that this too would not turn my lights off completely. They would dim to a really low level, but never to completely off. I poked around online, found forum thread after forum thread discussing adjusting low-end trim, and all those things, nothing worked for me. Now, I am not one to rely too heavily on manufacturer customer service for things like this. It's been my experience that most manufacturers really don't care about supporting their products after purchase. So, I reach out to customer service as a last resort. But, I have to say, Lutron Customer Case has been nothing short of absolutely perfect to work with so far.1) I didn't have to wait in a ridiculously long queue or wade through an endless sea of button prompts to talk to a human being. That was huge for me.2) Once I DID get a human being on the phone, I felt like they actually cared about my problem. So, I explained to the guy what was going on, and he bounced a few questions off me. The next part is what floored me though. After we had troubleshot the Lutron device, and ensured IT wasn't faulty, he THEN began to walk me through some things on my lights. Yes, they were dimmable LEDs, and yes they were compatible with the Caseta wireless dimmer. But, he said after perusing the LIGHT MANFUCACTURER'S information regarding my model of lights, he learned that this particular model needs to have a minimum of 6 lights on a circuit to fully dim, and I only had 3 on that circuit. So, I was bummed, I had just put a new ceiling in this room, and had planned it around having three lights, and 6 speakers in the ceiling. I didn't want to have to reconfigure everything. So, I asked if I was just screwed. The customer support rep said "Not exactly. We have a small device (LUT-MLC) we have tested and had great success with in similar instances. We have NOT tested on this particular brand or model of lights, but on other similar models from other brands, and this has worked. The device simulates an additional load on the circuit, allowing the dimmer switches to fully turn the lights off". He asked for my address and a few days later (at no extra charge) I had one of these devices. I installed it, as per the instructions given to me by Lutron support, and voila, works like a champ...Fast forward to a couple months later. I'd made some changes to t he room, and needed to move the switch from the old wall to a new wall I had built to expand the room. Upon reinstalling the switch, apparently I'd crossed some lines somewhere and blew the switch and the LUT-MLC device. I bought a new Lutron Caseta wireless dimmer switch, and contacted their support again, via email, to find out where I could buy a new LUT-MLC. I was unable to find them for sale anywhere except ebay, which had a few for ~$40-$60. Keep in mind, I never once asked them to send me anything for free, I simply wanted to buy my own replacement. I got an email back within 4 hours stating they had shipped me a new LUT-MLC. I got it 3 days later, installed it, and everything has worked perfectly since.I honestly have not had such a positive interaction with another company like this in my entire life. I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. They have gone out of their way to support me as a customer, and for that I will keep their products in my home as long as they keep making them. 5Works wonderfully, but no "favorite" button on main unit is a ridiculous oversight. Unit has been installed for a few weeks and is working perfectly. We installed the remote to the wall behind a wall plate, and it all looks very good. My only criticism would be that the main unit doesn't have the same center "favorite" button that the remote does. I don't know why this is the case, as it seems very obvious and makes the main unit much less user-friendly. Lucky for us, we have the remote in a location that gets used much more frequently. 4Very Easy to Setup and Configure I originally won a Lutron Caseta starter kit with this switch and a smart hub at a silent auction. I liked it so much I purchased a second switch from Amazon.I found the instillation to be quite easy. If you can install a light switch you can install the in wall switch. The smarthub was very easy to set up as well. The most troublesome part was figuring out how to set up scenes in the software and then add schedules. Once you figure it out and get it dialed in you won't have to mess with it much. The one catch is it requires dim-able LED bulbs. If you are using non-dimable LEDs the bulb will not turn off unless you pull the little on/off toggle located at the bottom of the switch. I also found that some cheap-o no name brand LEDs I've purchased on Amazon don't work properly so be careful and get decent LEDs or you'll be returning and repurchasing.I use my switches just for porch lights at this point with a schedule to turn them on at sunset and off at sunrise. The software seems to know what time that occurs and has drifted later into the day as the days have grown longer which is good. The Alexa integration is also nice and easy to set up and use. 5Great Lutron Product, Works with Siri after the Bridge There's only one problem with this Lutron dimmer switch. Once you install one, you will want to change all your other switches too, and in no time, you will be looking at hubs, bridges, lamp modules, screwless Claro wallplates, extra Pico remotes, and other accessories. Before you know it, you have spent too much upgrading your wiring and lighting system. It's all worth it, but you've been warned! This package comes with an extra Pico remote and already has a 1-gang Claro wallplate. It is much more feasible to get this over the wall remote, because you will save a lot over an extra remote and a wallplate. You can even use the wallplate somewhere else if you need a 2-gang for the dimmer switch, or even get the extra wall mount accessory for Pico remotes, and hang your remote as a switch on a flat wall. After installation, everything worked like a charm. I added a pro hub/bridge and multiple Pico remotes for 3-way and 4-way operations, and now I can even tell Siri to dim the lights in each room for me.If you have LED lights, sometimes they flash on highest levels. Lutron has adjustable trim levels, and you can lower the high end or increase the low end trims. To do so for higher level flashing, just hold down both the top arrow (second button from top) and ON button (first button on top) simultaneously for about 6 seconds until a light starts to flash on the left side. Now you can use the up and down arrows to adjust the light. I had to press down arrow several times until the LEDs stopped flashing. Then I pushed down the OFF button (last button) for 6 seconds and it saved my higher trim. Lower trim is the same way, and you just hold down the down arrow and ON button to go into the set mode. If your LED does not turn on when you press up arrow once (when they are off), you can increase the lower trim level to avoid that.I am extremely satisfied with Lutron products. They are high quality and are very aesthetically pleasing to look. I have changed all my other wallplates to Claro, and they look good on all paint colors. 5On always sets to 100% I really want to like these more, they worked great for our patio lighting where we only had the 2-cable setup (so no neutral wire for a more traditional smart-switch). The main complaint is that when you turn the lights on with any method other than one of their specialty remotes (using only the center button on the remote, not the on bottom either), it will turn on to 100% brightness. I think this is a bit silly given that if you can do it at all the system must have the information somewhere, why not change the behavior slightly to work in a way that is more convenient for everyone?! There is a way to modify the minimum brightness for the switch, but no way to change the maximum brightness or to set the default brightness when turned on either though the app, google home/alexa, or the switches themselves! 3Perfect Way to Start Converting to a Smart Home My house is full of manual Lutron switches, but I hadn't ventured into its Caseta products until now. I decided to convert a few key areas of my house into an automated system that works with Amazon Alexa. I have tried a variety of Wi-Fi connected switches and plugs, and all of them are junk compared to this wonderful system. Sure, it's expensive, but you most certainly get what you pay for in this category of electronic productsI connected the Lutron "smart bridge" hub to my router, installed a couple of the switches, and it was all easy to program and works so perfectly. I was surprised how smoothly the transition went. Then I programmed a couple of the little pico remotes, and that was easy as it possibly could have been as well. I particularly like the "favorite" button in the middle of those little remote controls, which make it possible to go back to a certain setting that I've determined is "just right" for a variety of lighting situations. And the little pedestals you can get for them are so extraordinary, it surprises me how much I am delighted with such a trifle. They are solid, stay put, and offer up these little remotes at exactly the right angle.Since I got this first switch and its remote (along with a starter kit with the Lutron smart bridge), I've further expanded my system. I've even gotten several Lutron dimmer switches that required a neutral wire. I had avoided that up until then because I thought it was going to be complicated, but I soon discovered that neutral wires and been hiding in the back of every switch box in my house all along. As soon as I figured that out, I was able to get even more sophisticated Lutron switches for my low-voltage lighting fixtures. Now, I'm well on my way to a smart home, thanks to Lutron. Of all the systems to choose from -- many of which make putting together a smart home a dumb, surprisingly complicated and frustrating project that's rife with inexplicable incompatibilities -- this one's the best. 5Life changing, but a little track light buzzing/pulsating This system is life changing, I've done my whole apartment. The Geofencing is amazing - I set a "scene" to turn on and when I get within a few blocks of my apartment they turn on. I've got plug-in dimmers, lots of these wall dimmers, and some switches (for fans, under cabinet fluorescents etc). I have a Honeywell wifi thermostat (using MyTotalConnect.com) and it worked seamlessly. I don't notice a huge battery drain on my iPhone from the app, which runs in the background always.I am having a few minor "problems". A couple of my halogen track light locations are exhibiting "pulsating" lights - most notably when dimmed a bit. Less visible at full brightness. This is a new phenomenon that began with this new Caseta switch. It is not on regular incandescent bulbs at all. Also, some fixtures now buzz (on dim and when fully lit, although less when in full on position) whereas the same tracks/bulbs did not buzz before.Lastly, and especially with the plug-in dimmer that coordinates in the Caseta product suite, I SWEAR when fully "on" that the light(s) are not as bright as with my prior dimmer switch or with no dimmer on the circuit. I'm curious if anyone else noticed this. It's almost like the switch doesn't let it "max out" and is therefore very slightly darker in my room(s). I don't think this is a material issue and it might be in my mind - it is difficult to measure precisely/objectively.These things are brainless to install and I wish I'd done it years ago. I got about 30 switches replaced and the electrician (in NYC) was about $550 for the 3hr job (2 men). I've also been surprised with the range in my apt - they say 30', or 60' with direct line of sight but some switches are 45' away from the "brain" with several heavy double-sheetrocked walls in between (these walls stop wifi but the local connectivity of this switch network to the brain is unaffected). 5Super Convenient and Easy to Install I love this Lutron Caseta switch. The builder installed several of these throughout our new home and I bought additional ones to automate even more of the lights. This integrates with Alexa and iOS Home to allow for easy control either directly from my iPhone or by talking to Alexa or Siri. The switches are easy to install and by pairing with a Pico switch, you can place switches in additional locations. I added a third switch to an upstairs hall light that was desperately needed near the spare bedroom. The "Schedules" allow you to have lights turned on or off based on a certain time of day, so now we never come home to a dark house. It's possible to have the system turn on when you get nearby, using a geofence on the phone, but I don't have this enabled in my current configuration. The newly released "Smart Away" feature will randomly turn lights on when you're not at home to make your place look "lived in" while you're away. 5Reliable, Well-built, Smooth Dimming (LED, Hal, Incan), Highly Recommend! Contrary to the reviews written in 2014, this is now an Apple HomeKit Certified connected home product *IF* paired with the Lutron Smart Bridge (version 2)!I purchased this item a few weeks ago, and thus far it has exceeded expectations. Here is a list of pros and cons that I have experienced.PRO: *Can be controlled with 4 Physical Buttons on Dimmer, Connected App, and 5 Button Remote * 600 watt Incandescent/Halogen Load or 150 watt LED load * Quite reliable, quick/responsive. * Smooth Dimming for entire range on LED, Incandescent, and Halogen * Impressive RF Wireless Range * No Neutral Wire required * Includes RF Pico Remote with memory that can be tied to other Caseta products as well. * Can be linked to sync with other Caseta products * Easy Setup * Secure Encryption if used with iOS devices and the Lutron Bridge * Solid Build Quality from a trusted name in lighting * Completely Silent does not hum, buzz, click, or otherwise emit any audible sound. * Can be controlled via remote or physical control panel if hub is not present/unavailable (you will just lack the capacity to control via a smart phone/tablet app) * If using version 2 Bridge - Apple HomeKit Certified meaning you can use Siri on your iOS device to control all or individual light s power status and their brightness. NICE!!CON: * Uses Lutron s Proprietary Clear Connect wireless control protocol * Power failure results in dimming set to Full ON not returning to previous state * No Memory Button on Wall Switch control panel, just on Pico RemoteThere are a few limitations to the dimmer, however I feel that benefits outweigh the shortcomings. I do recommend this system to anyone that already has a Smart Bridge from Lutron or an otherwise compatible hub from another companyThanks for taking the time to read my review! If it was helpful, please click the Yes option at the top.If not, I welcome comments and concerns. 5Absolutely Essential! Installed six of these in my new home and couldn't be more happy. IMO, it's essential to have these working with the App.. You ll need the Lutron smart bridge (ASIN B00XPW67ZM) to access these wirelessly. It was super simple to configure and love the fact you can set the precise light % within it (1%-99%).. You only have a few lighting options (i.e. High / Med-High / Low etc..) if using the physical switch.I wasn't using the app for the first month (while my place was being renovated) and had wondered if I made a costly mistake buying these over standard dimmers.. As soon as I hooked up the smart bridge, voila.. It transformed my place.. I m able to easily (and I stress EASILY) create scenes within the app, making it a one-touch feature.. I.E. I have a scene where each light is set at 10%, another scene where all the lights are set at 25% and so forth.. One is set for Off and all one needs to do is open the app and you ll see all your Scenes on the home page.. Love it!! I justified the cost of these only being $30 more than standard dimmers Not bad once you experience the functionality of being able to control your whole house lighting from wherever you may be (in the kitchen or even on vacation).. I had selected the sleek looking Lutron DVCL-153P initially and installed them in some locations but after experiencing the wireless capabilities in the Caseta Wireless, I returned them and swapped them out for these It is pricey no-doubt but highly, highly recommended!Lastly, I found the remote controls (I mistakenly bought) will be absolutely pointless.. Save yourself $5 and don t buy the Switch/Remote pack like I did.. I now have a box of them I will almost certainly never use.. Another thing I wish they made was a switch for high-wattage lights.. I have a chandelier that is close 1000K watts and had to settle for what is a far inferior looking switch and not wireless 5
