Customer Reviews

Most expensive cheap item.It arrived in a slightly damaged package. I think this was a return because once I started putting it together I found out that there wasn't the plastic rubber foundation on one side in order for me to screw the posts that hold the hamper together. I would not recommend purchasing this.1CAUTION - NOT SUITABLE FOR EVERY LOCATIONThis hamper looks nice, functions well and is fairly easy to assemble with two people. Watch out for the poor reviews and take heed. Do not put this hamper near a heater or near any radiator or furnace vent. The heat will warp the wood. Also, do not put this hamper in a bathroom that gets excessively humid and steamy. If your bathroom mirror steams up and stays that way for more than a few minutes after a shower be advised that this excess moisture will warp the hamper. If you plan on placing this hamper in a bedroom against a wall that is away from heat sources or inside a clothes closet it should be fine and last for many years.4I love it. Very nice looking.Update: almost four years later and it's still going strong. The price tags was still to high to get one for my son, so I got him a tall fabric hamper to make difficult for the dog to get into the clothes. I did buy a second one recently, for my husband's laundry. He didn't want to share a hamper. He likes to keep his dirty laundry in the laundry basket. Since we are selling our house, his dirty laundry has to be in something that will hide it, and this will fit the bill. No one wants to see his dirty drawers. Still very happy with mine. Was worth every penny. After an expensive vet visit involving a sock, I determined that our old hampers would no longer suffice because they didn't have lids. Long story short, dog ate sock. Dog threw up sock and a few more times after that. Anyway, I searched high and low for one that was the right size. I also wanted something that would blend in nicely with our bedroom. I wanted something that didn't look like cheap plastic. If I wanted cheap plastic, I'd run to the Wal-Mart up the street. I misread the dimensions and it turns out it was shorter than I expected but was a few inches wider than our old ones, so it evened out. It's laundry day tomorrow, so our existing hamper was mostly full. I transferred the dirty clothes to this one and it fit nicely with the lid closed. It should be able to handle one more days' worth of clothing.Assembly.In the box you get the fabric bag with long thin metal rails, two large wood slatted panels (front and back), two smaller ones (sides) and a panel made of really hard cardboard (what's the correct term?) as the bottom. You also get the needed hardware with a separate bag of hardware labeled "extra". It also came with a little tool that was flat head on one side and Philips on the other. I used it, but I preferred my own tools because I could get a better grip on them. The hamper was relatively easy to assemble. If you have assembled Ikea furniture before, this will be a breeze. It took about 30 minutes and that was me taking my time. I probably could have got it done in 15-20 minutes if I tried. It was very light, so it wasn't difficult to move around while assembling. The hardest part was screwing on the lid to the hinges and the lever. I would recommend a light power tool. A simple power screw driver would suffice. They have the hinges on one side already screwed in. But the holes on the lid are barely started. You need more than a hand tool to screw in the screws.Looks:I don't know if it's real wood. If it's fake, they did a really good job of making it look real. It looks really nice. I like the color. It's almost like cherry wood only a bit lighter. The picture is pretty accurate but it depends on your monitor settings. It's about as wide as your standard bathroom door and falls about 12 inches short of the door handle. It holds mine and my husband's laundry and we do laundry once a week. If you have kids, I would recommend you get additional ones.Final thoughts:I've only had this for a few hours, so if anything changes, I will most certainly update it. I like the way it looks, I like that the lid opens smoothly. It will slam shut if you are not careful. The arm attached to the lid absorbs some of the force, but if you let the lid fall shut, it will slam. The handles on the side make it easy to move around. I may consider getting one for my son because if the dog cannot get to my socks, he will try to get to my son's. I am not sure why he feels the need to eat MY socks. I think having the hamper will stop that. The only thing left that I don't like is the price. It's a bit high but if it's durable and doesn't fall apart in a year, it will be money well spent. I may keep an eye on the price and see if it goes down before I buy my son one.Pros:Looks nicer then cheap plastic hampers, blends in nicely with wood furniture.Easy to assemblelightHolds the right amount of laundry for two people who do laundry once a week. (not including bathroom towels)Cons:PriceLid will slam shut if you are not carefulSome might not like the size. If you are looking for a family sized hamper, look elsewhere.I hope this review helped. I will try to answer any questions you may have.UPDATE: 3/5/2016It's still in great shape. No bend or cracks. The color had not faded either. All in all, it still looks the same as when I got it. The only thing that came apart was the rubber feet thingy on the lid. They muffle the sound when the lid falls shut. You can get replacements of those anywhere. I meant to get more of them but I keep forgetting. I remember every time the lid falls on my head when I am reaching inside the hamper to get something at the bottom. :). You would think I would learn by now not to do that. The arm will keep the lid up, but if you bump into the lid, it will fall shut.5Wood Laundry Hamper Putting this laundry hamper together took me 20 minutes. Only required a screwdriver to get it done. A tool is included to use on the screws if you do not have a screwdriver. TIPS: Put the hamper together on firm, flat flooring/surface -- not on a carpet/rug. Doing this on a carpet/rug can cause the hamper bottom to be uneven. Do not store hamper near any heating units since this is a wood product and it would become warped over time. Also want to avoid a possible fire hazard!I like the color of the wood. The laundry bag inside is washable. The lid has a notch in it to enable ease in opening it. 4Good looking laundry box This is a nice looking laundry box, we wanted something to match the wood in my husbands recently redone closet and it looks beautiful in there. It s a good size, the quality could be a bit better as far as the wood is concerned but for the money this is what you get, having said that we do love it and are happy with the purchase. I would recommend it! 4looks great and the right sizeNot real wood. It looks handsome, looks great and the right size. Looked so good I put it together and threw away the packaging. Two days later the coating (it's like a plastic film) started peeling off and never stopped. Being I had thrown away box and packaging I knew I was now stuck with it. Also every so often many of the screws have to be tighten.1Not the most durable Loved it at first. Easy to assemble and looked good for having to have it out in a hallway. I ve had it 3 months and the bottom has popped out. I need to see if I can reinforce it, but I should ve have to. We use this for dirty towels only so sometimes being damp they are heavier but shouldn t cause damage to the hamper. 3Pieces don't stay togetherThis is a piece of junk, don't waste your time. The casters needed to fasten the long screws to hold it together don't hold it together. Ocean Star customer service was not helpful at all. They said they would get back to me and never did.1A nightmare to assemble. Plan two hours, three people and four glasses of wine. After reading the reviews, I was pleased to read it should not take more than 20 minutes to assemble. Two hours later, I felt like throwing the darn thing out the window. The hardware doesn t fit right and even using an electric screwdriver, the fittings wouldn t tighten. It s together, wobbly and I m over it. I m going to keep it because it s fine as long as I don t have to move it but this wasn t my idea of a wonderful Saturday night. Well, at least it looks nice.4Warped to failure after a year.Edit: after about a year (inside, in a climate controlled apartment) the wooden continued to warp until it essentially self destructed. (Pictures attached). I will now have to disassemble it and see if I can repair/reinforce the tenon that ate itself. I am disappointed. This was a pain to assemble but a joy to have and use. It looks fantastic and works great, but the panels don't quite line as they should as the wood appears to have warped after manufacture. I had just finished putting IKEA furniture together (and thought THAT was a pain in the neck) and this small rectangular cube proved to me that it can always be worse. If you get one that isn't warped, you'll have it together in less than 5 minutes. Otherwise, well, it took me closer to half an hour of leaning on portions while reaching inside and setting the specialized screws to hold it together. On a good note, once it's together it looks fantastic. I'm in a studio apartment (without a lot of room) I wanted a hamper that looked good enough to be visible instead of hiding in a closet. This looks fantastic.2Very nice HamperI've never had a wooden hamper before, and this is certainly a step up from the various plastic bins or wicker baskets I've used in the past! It was relatively easy to assemble - took me a little time, but I am one of the least handy people ever. I think the hinge part was slightly misaligned, but I just screwed the screws in where they fit, and it seems to work fine.It says this is "teak style", but the color is actually quite a bit darker and more on the reddish side than actual teak. I'd say it's more of a "cherry", so even though I bought this for our bathroom to go with a teak shelf we have, I'm going to move it to our bedroom where we have other cherry colored furniture, and buy a bamboo one for our bathroom, which I think will match better with the teak.If you do buy this, I'd recommend getting a couple of those felt pads to put on the inside of the cover, because if you let it go, it will slam.4Very Poor Quality ControlTo start, the price initially offered increased when I advanced to the purchase page. In spite of the misleading initial price I continued with the purchase because even with the price increase the product was still competitivly price and it photographed as a good looking and sturdy hamper. The headache came on assembly:1. hardware part B is provided to accept hardware part B. These 2 pieces did not mesh securely on assembly. I have used this type of hardware from other manufacturers and they have always provided for a tight fit. Not the case here.2. additionally, the plastic insert used to accept hardware part A was not install on 2 of the holes so there was absolutely no function.3. I was forced to drill 4 holes and use screws to overcome #1 and #2 above.4. the predrilled holes for the hinges were not large enough for the screws. I tried to force the first screw and it sheared in the hole when it was half way into the wood. Guess how long it took to remove the broken piece from the wood.5. i have it assembled but have yet to fill the counter sunk screw holes I made to secure the hamper together. It looks great, its totally functional, I mean its just a clothes hamper . However, I would never recommend the product to others because of the assembly problems. It should have taken maybe 30 minutes for assembly. I've got 2 full hours in and its still not complete. This should have been a great product except for poor quality control.1Don't waste your money! Was so excited to get this laundry basket...loved the style and color. Upon attempting to assemble it, however...the metal pieces supplied to lock the sides and bottom into place were cheap, cheap cheap...several sheared off. It seemed like the metal lock screws (for lack of a better name) didnt line up with the screw heads they were designed for. I've assembled dozens of items before, so can't blame it on inexperience. Ended up returning it. Advice to company: spend a little more on R & D design and quality of fasteners.1
