Buy a Pampered Chef Chopper! Not very solid. Had to use a plate to get it to chop. The soft cap wasn t cutting it. Spend more and buy a Pampered Chef chopper. I m not a PC seller but you can t beat their chopper for the money. If you are looking for a good quality chopper don't by this one. It's not good. Buy a Pampered Chef chopper. I've been using the same Pampered Chef Chopper for 15 years. I bought this chopper because I figured my 15-year-old Pampered Chef chopper blades were getting dull from the years of use. My 15-year-old chopper worked better than the OXO Good Grips Chopper. Don't buy this one! 1Chopaholics dream People complain in other reviews about the size, so I was expecting this to be on the smaller side and it is. But it's not the size that counts; it's how it chops. It does a good job. I use it mainly for small quantities of garlic. I also like the design. It's easy to take apart to clean. Much better than my sharper image chopper which fit more but would spring load pop apart on me every time I used it. 5Not a good product. I bought the large and it is much smaller than expected: the 13" given for the product height is actually the height of the packaging. The item itself is about 8" high and has a content cup 3.5" diameter and 1.5" high - tiny!I got this so my kids could chop onions and tomatoes etc for cooking as they love to help. Unfortunately, it is fiddly to open to remove chopped food and the blade cover comes off when you open it, which makes it unsuitable for children to use without constant supervision. This item does not chop through tomatoes (the skin is left whole and the flesh is mushed), it does not chop flat-leaf herbs (they're left bruised and wilted, but still broadly whole). It did manage mozzarella balls and canadian bacon. As usual for Good Grips items, it had non-slip rubber on the base and handle. It was easy to clean in the dishwasher. The Amazon website flagged this item as not eligible for return, however, Amazon's excellent customer services issued a refund.Choose another option as this item does not work. 1Don't. Just ... don't. I've never regretted a purchase as I do this one. I tested it on a red onion. It wouldn't chop unless I cut the onion into quarters and put very small amounts inside. Even then, it pulverized some pieces but left other pieces whole. Then the lid at the bottom kept coming loose, and I'd stop to fix it, but then the top of the unit came loose. It basically took me twice as long to chop the onion with this device than if I'd done it by hand. And it takes me for-freaking-ever to chop by hand. This is also a nightmare to clean if you don't have a dish washer because bits of food get stuck on, in-between, or around the blades, and you can't dismantle it further to reach those places. 1Handy little mincer I bought the small version of this to cut down on the mincing prep time to make guacamole, which I do almost every week. It was smaller than I expected and I had to rough cut onions, jalapenos, and tomatoes for them to fit. I did not use the cover/base lid, but chopped directly on a cutting board. It took a bit of practice, but I found the trick is to really pound the top of the cylinder hard with a fast pumping motion. It evenly minced the onions in less than 10 seconds, saving me 5 minutes. I rough chopped the jalapenos, placed skin side up, minced in 6 seconds, saving me another 3 min. Tomatoes were trickier. The first time I used hothouse tomatoes which are less fleshy and more juicy (even after removing the juice and seeds). It mashed more than it minced them, not always cutting cleanly through the skin, leaving a few pieces clinging to each other. When I switched to firmer plum tomatoes, bam, minced to perfection without turning them into a pulp, another 3 min saved. Next the cilantro, not a chance, I might as well been making a mojito. The thin leafy herbs quickly turned mushy. I knew well enough not to attempt it on the avocado.Medium to firm veggies are processed very well in this chopper. I found the harder and faster the pumping action, the better the end product. After using it a few times, it cut my prep time for guac to less than a third of what I could do by hand (my dicing skills are poor to those of a pro). The scoop it comes with is kind of silly and provides no more utility than a spoon or small rubber spatula. For $10, it's a great value and works well with most firmish veggies. I found it easy to hand clean ( I read the directions on taking it apart). I did not chance putting it in a dishwasher. I intend to buy the larger one for bigger jobs. 4Disappointing! Not as expected I like OXO products, but, for the first time, I am disappointed in an OXO product. (1) If you look at the bottom of the chopper, you will see that the transparent cup fits into a black rubber seal that also serves as the base of the chopper. I have noticed that some commenters have written that this seal or gasket can be removed, but, if so, my hands are not strong enough to remove it. I can't get it off at all and previously assumed (before reading the comments) that it was permanently affixed to the transparent cup. The seal comes-up about 1/8" to form the base. I discovered that chopped bits of food were wedged down between the seal and sides of the transparent cup. These will not rinse out. If your hands are not strong enough to remove the seal (if it can be removed), you will have to figure-out a way to remove the trapped food either with a slender kitchen utensil or with your fingernail. (Sorry, I know it's gross!) I don't know whether or not I received a particularly badly made chopper or whether this is a design flaw. NOTE: See UPDATE below. (2) It takes a good amount of effort and time to chop the food. Even though the transparent cup shows that it will hold 1 cup, in reality you can only chop about 1/4 cup and then will need to empty the transparent cup. If you don't, the chopping blade does not have enough vertical space to operate well. It will take a fair amount of force to chop manually, so this gift is not ideal for a senior or anyone with limited mobility.Like all OXO products, it is well made and seems sturdy. The blade did a good job of chopping the vegetables. As one commenter noted, however, you will have to chop the vegetables into small chunks to fit them inside the small transparent cup.I plan to use the chopper (if I don't toss it) for celery, shallots, and similar kinds of items.I have never owned a chopper before and so can't comment about this chopper in comparison to similar products. I do like the OXO brand, however, and was surprised to discover that this item has been disappointing.UPDATE: Since writing the comment above, I discovered that the base with black rubber seal is easy to remove if I run it under very hot water and then punch the base lightly to push it out of the transparent cup. Show Less 3It chops broccoli well, but others not so much ... It chops broccoli well, but others not so much. Pictured below is a pepper- it cut it, but not all the way through. Will continue to use for other veggies, though. 3slap chop 2 Wanted a slap chop, bought this instead. Best $20 over ever spent! Cleans easy, chops all my veggies fast, especially onions. Some veggies are a little annoying or hard to chops, but those arent appropriate for this thing anyway and that's just me being lazy. Lol 5Bits of plastic sheared off into food As many others have described, the plastic tray that you chop on is defective, and bits of plastic are sheared off into the food you are chopping. Please avoid this chopper to ensure that you are not consuming plastic! 1Great little chopper This is a really great little chopper especially for small items like garlic. I recently had some dental work done and had to chop things very small for a soup. This little chopper did the job! I hate chopping garlic and don't care for a lot of the garlic presses, with this little chopper I get the small dice I'm looking for and don't get the smell on my hands since it has a little spatula that comes with it to remove whatever is in the cup!My husband recently also purchased the larger one for me and I can't wait to use it! I have arthritis and Dupuytren's contracture which is a fibromatosis in the palm of the hand. It causes thickening of the ligaments and eventually draws your fingers to the palm. Well this chopper is so easy to use despite those things! I can use the heel or the other hand. I can't do that with a knife... well... not if I want to keep my fingers anyway! This chopper is great for anyone who has hand issues and can't chop the traditional way. Just a few slaps and done! 5
