Customer Reviews

Wonderful. Finally a wok that is hot enough to stir fry instead of just boiling. Finally, I've got a wok that is hot enough. Previously, the ingredients would cool off a wok on the stove, even on high, and I'd end up just boiling everything. I had some success with a cast iron wok -- I'd set it to high while I chopped up all the ingredients and heat it to 700 degrees. The thermal mass would keep it hot enough, but only if I cooked no more than 3 servings and of course it would almost instantly burn the first ingredients. I had about 5 seconds to flavor the oil with garlic, and the I'd dump in the meat, and slower to cook items like green beans, to get the temperature down, trying not to set off the smoke detector! With this wok, it can keep temperatures high enough throughout the entire process. I think I had it a bit too hot (set to 400) as the soy sauce added at the end burned on the bottom. Cleanup was a snap; filled with 2" of water, set it to 400 and the water started boiling in no time at all. The boiling water unstuck the burnt mess and everything was sparkling clean in seconds.Next trials will be at lower temperatures. I don't need to have it set to max. 5Very Surprised at how well we like this!We had replaced all of our old Teflon non stick cookware awhile back for health reasons but not our Wok. We decided it was finally time to retire our old one since the non stick coating was flaking. We wanted another large one (which this is). But we weren't sure if we should do a ceramic one (which doesn't work well with high heat), a PFOE free non stick(which who knows how safe that is long term), or a stainless one. We ruled out cast iron because we didn't want the weight and rusting issues. We chose this Wok but we were nervous about sticking issues. However, that worry was unnecessary. We use plenty of healthy fats when cooking in the Wok, so we haven't had sticking issues. As long as you use the right oils and the right amount of oil... and stir regularly it doesn't seem to be a problem. We also love that this has a lid, our old one did not. And, we really like that it is dishwasher and sink safe. That makes cleaning up a breeze. Sometimes reading lots of reviews on amazon can become almost paralyzing. Some people love an item and some hate it making it hard to make a decision. Ignore any bad ones, this thing rocks if you use it right! 5I am back in the stir fry kitchen, thanks to this easy to use Wok!So easy to use! simply unpack the box, wash the skillet and the lid, plug the heating element in, and you are off to stir fry heaven. One note if you purchase this, they recommend that you season the wooden spatula with mineral oil, just a heads up in case you don't have any oil on hand). I made our first stir fry meal in less than 15 minutes using : 1/2 pack of Birds Eye Frozen Oriental Stir Fry vegetables (52 oz package), 6 ounces of leftover baked chicken breasts, and Coconut Secret GF and Soy Free Teriyaki sauce. You simply turn the wok onto medium heat, add 1 TBSP of oil, toss in the frozen veggies, cover and cook for about 11 minutes. I then tossed in the sliced precooked chicken, and 4 TBSP of the Coconut secret sauce and cooked this for about 4 more minutes. It came out fabulous, and is low in calories!! and it is easy to clean, just put the wok in hot soapy water and use soft sponge to gently clean the wok. 5Great wok, well made, no harmful fumes from non-stick surface.I've owned woks in the past and all had non-stick surfaces on the interior. I was hesitant to purchase a wok that didn't have that feature as I was sure that the clean up would be a difficult job. Since most wok recipes call for fairly high temperatures and I had read that fumes and particles can get into your food with non-stick cookware, I decided to give this one a try. However, after seasoning the wok with olive oil, the food didn't stick at all, even at the high temperature that was required to cook it. To say that I love this new piece of kitchen equipment is an understatement. The base is wide so it is virtually untippable. The clear glass lid makes it easy to see how things are going without having to lift it off. The temperature control is easy to use and seems to be accurate. Also, this wok is large enough to prepare enough for several people. I made a chicken stir fry for six and it was large enough to handle that. The craftsmanship of the Presto 5900 is very good and I believe it will withstand years of use. If you are looking for a wok for personal use or a gift, I can highly recommend this one. 5Does Not Heat High EnoughTried to stir fry with temp set to max 400 degrees (F), but chicken had trouble browning and ended up more like boiing itself.Do not believe that wok is designed to maintain high temperature under load of food, especially meats.Using Infrared Thermometer with wok set at 400 degrees, got a maximum of 215 degrees (F) with no food in the wokbefore the wok thermostat shut the heat off and then I snapped this picture with infrared thermometer at 203 degrees (F). Also got residue at bottom of wok during stir fry cooking. Had to boil water in wok and srape with wooden spatula that was included, then had to use Bar Keeper's Friend cleaner as recommended in the manual to get the rest of the brown burnt residue on the bottom of the wok off. Not easy to keep clean and does not cook at dialed temperature. 2Love itI always read the 1-star reviews first but in the case of this item I don t understand the complaints. This wok heats precisely and quickly, yes it can burn if you re cooking meat but using the right oil minimizes that, and the stainless steel is amazingly easy to clean with soap and water. If you haven t got a gas stove to use a standard wok this is a perfect solution. 5Excellent compared to Teflon woksPros:it's huge - I can throw chicken in and let it sizzle without a lot of splatter getting out, or cook up a ton of broccoli all at once with just a bit of water. It's steel - I bought this to replace a Teflon coated electric wok that I've used the heck out of. I got used to how easy the Teflon wok was to clean, but didn't like cooking on Teflon. I thought this own would be a little tougher to clean, but after seasoning it once, it only takes warm water to completely clean out. Super easy. (To season: scrub it down when you get it, throw some oil in, coat it well, heat it up until smoking, then unplug and let cool for a long time. Repeat one more time)Cons:Only the very bottom gets hot. My old Teflon walk heated the whole thing evenly, allowing the entire surface to be used for frying.Overall, pretty dang good 4.5/5Photo shows seasoning in the bottom. I suspect the test will become seasoned over time, but it'll take a loooooong time. 4Dishwasher safe?I just bought this and after three times through the dishwasher, the screws holding the legs on are rusting! I contacted Presto. They sent me new screws and told me to tip it better in the dishwasher so water can't pool, or, better yet, wash by hand! I bought it BECAUSE I didn't want to wash by hand! I have a disability and standing at the sink makes my leg ache and swell. To me, the screws should be stainless steel, so they don't rust! How much would that cost Presto? FYI, I bought their folding skillet at the same time. It had design flaws, too. I'm very disappointed in Presto! But, I love the wok. I intend to use it a lot! It's terrific for making tempura chicken and French fries. They say that it is now for deep frying, but I use it for that all the time. It works great. I bought it for that purpose after reading that woks were designed for deep frying. I just wish that Presto really designed this for cleaning in a dishwasher! 4Wonderful product.I bought this wok for my teenage son who was starting to get interested in cooking on his own. We love Asian dishes so after a bunch of research, I went with this one and I do not regret it one bit. This wok heats pretty quickly and evenly (which means evenly along the bottom flat area and lower rounded parts near the bottom as a normal wok does). As with other reviews, I was careful with changing the heat temp during cooking because it reacts quickly; I typically stir fry at 350 and let it sit at that temps as we make our dishes. It's easy to clean with soap and water...a light swipe with a Brillo pad for tougher stuck-on things and it comes clean every time. (I have not put it in the dishwasher even though it says it's dishwasher safe.) 5I like this wok.Since I started to change my diet and include more freshly prepared vegetables, I have been on the lookout for a good wok for my stir fry's. I do not have a gas stove top (wish I did) so wok cooking is a little tough as the whole point is to have the heat lick up the sides for uniform heat.. This was a good choice. Although the element is only on the bottom and it doesn't really cook the same as a wok on gas, it still does a good job and if I stay on top of stiring everything well, it seems to cook evenly. I read the reviews on this one and liked the idea of not having a non-stick surface because they always start to deteriorate after time. However, because it does not have a non stick coating, I always end up with a sticky mess at the bottom of the wok but all I do is pour some water in the bottom and let it soak. After dinner, I return to the kitchen and pour out the water and it is basically clean. Easy .....no mess. Nicely made, well priced, does the trick, cleans up well....can't ask for much more than that!! 4
