Customer Reviews

Solid pen, especially for the price.Good pen with enough heft to feel comfortable while writing without fatigue. The look is classic, the mechanical construction is quality, and so far, the finish has held up pretty well. I would definitely recommend this is a "daily user" for someone who likes a medium heavy roller ball. I use this for travel since I don't care to travel with my fountain pens, but increasingly I reach for this at home as well. For the price, I haven't seen many pens that I would prefer.4fine point fountain penI purchased the Sheaffer 330 Glossy Black, Chrome Plate Trim, fine point fountain pen. This is my third Sheaffer 300 fountain pen. The fine point was more temperamental out of the box then my medium and bold nibs'. After filling the pen with my bottle ink, it began to slowly seep, regardless of how I stored it. I was close to retuning it but I decided to use all the ink out, clean it all out, then try it again. Since I gave it a cleaning the pen has been working great. I have owned this a little over a month now and it is my daily writer.4One of my favorite pensI am a long time fan of Shaeffer pens. As a collector, I own dozens of them from inexpensive models to special editions in sterling silver or palladium. This pen is metal with an attractive black coating and gold tone accents. Considering how inexpensive it is, the quality and beauty are remarkable. It is a good size for my hand and it has good balance. The coating has proved to be durable. One very important feature for me is that the rollerball takes standard (Pilot) refills rather than Shaeffer's proprietary offering. I should comment that the brushed chrome version has all the good qualities of the gloss black pen and is about half the price.5Pleasantly surprised!I was nervous about this purchase because 1. It's made in China. 2. Other reviews said it's top heavy. Well it's not as great a construction as a Waterman but for $30 it's a steal! Great weight, it is a little too heavy but with my big hands it actually angles right to write smoother. The feel is perfect. I am very happy I made this purchase. Going to try the taranis next.5Decent pen, but probably not one that I would buy again.I have the glossy black version of this pen with gold trim. The $50-150 is a hard market in my opinion, especially when you are looking at companies like Sheaffer that really focus on premium pens. Very often their middle-of-the-road offerings can be disappointing because they have to give you something a bit more "premium" than a budget pen to make it worth the price. I wonder what I am getting with this model really that makes it worth $70 and not $20. Obviously one cannot expect a pen like this to compete with pens that are $400+, but it does not appear any more expensive than a Jinhao or some other budget brand. As another reviewed noted, the section is pretty cheap and you can see the seam in the plastic. The cap is actually heavier than the pen, which is a major design flaw. I like to use my pens posted, but this one is far too top heavy in that configuration. It may not be a major concern for someone who keeps the cap off though. Some other reviewers have noted that this pen is a dry writer, and I agree. That's not necessarily a flaw in the design, but if you prefer a wetter pen, I would look elsewhere. This pen is a decent writer. It's not incredibly smooth, but I do not mind a bit of feedback. I'll probably keep this pen as a backup, but overall, I would recommend spending a little more and getting a Waterman Expert. If all you care about is a smooth writing experience, you would do better with a Faber-Castell Loom, a TWSBI Eco or a TWSBI 580. All three of those are cheaper than the Sheaffer 300, but none have such a classic design.2Life long I have always owned a version of this pen. And never just one. I need one on the side "just in case". I like the firmer points and this pen provides good writing in a traditional way. I have the new felt tips and the roller balls but the Sheaffer just keeps being the best serious writing instrument I can find. And it is one of the longest lasting fountain pens. A dying breed. 5Cheap plastic on the grip, bad flowI bought this pen after drooling over it's picture on amazon for months. But then when I received, I noticed the following things:1. The grip is made of cheap plastic, to the point that the cheapness shows. I understand it's not a $2000 pen, but I have had pens given away for free with better finish. I care about this because I thought Sheaffer symbolizes elegance. 2. It's made in China. I have used chinese fountain pens and some of them are really great, but none of them came with a price tag of $50. I won't care about it if point 1 was not so conspicuous. 3. The pen writes pretty smooth, but then the flow stops often even when there is ink inside. It's not that I left it open for long and it dried up, it happens in the middle of writing, and then you have to shake it to get the flow back. The outside looks okay. I hesitated a lot before returning it, but finally I just did.2Beautiful pen!Beautiful high quality pen. Great for those who like very thick pens. I returned mine because of that. I ended up opting for the 100 model which is essentially the same but with less diameter.5heavy but smoothI have a small (12) fountain pen collection and purchased this to add. Some of my pens are expensive and I'd rather not carry them often so this pen for $40 won't break me if I lose. I didn't expect a fine lacquered barrel at this price but it writes smooth and no problem if not used for a few days. The cap is on the heavy side but not a negative for my writing style.5Good pen, reasonable price, great gift, even for yourself.Beautiful, heavy pen. Nice glossy finish, and the nib is a two tone gold / silver color, which is very attractive. The pens were bought as Christmas gifts, so I never really used them. I have a similar pen, which writes really well, and that is why I chose these Sheaffer pens. The price was also reasonable. If you have never written, or have not written for a long time, this is good pen for a reasonable price to start with. Buy a bottle of ink and use the provided converter, and stay away from the cartridges. They are too expensive. I would recommend Noodler's ink.Noodler's Black Waterproof Fountain Pen Ink - Bulletproof,3 ounce5Amazing pen for the price.I got this pen for 30 dollars, and it's the best value I've gotten at this price point. Very heavy pen with full metal construction, a sturdy hinged clip at the top, and a genuine Sheaffer nib that's very, very smooth for 30 dollars. If you're looking at a Lamy Safari, I'd definitely pay the extra 7 bucks for this pen.5
