    Poor consistency, mediocre workmanshipThese units have a nice design, and solid pine construction. And they're packed for shipping extremely carefully. So far so good. As noted in my review of their matching coffee table, they're much darker than their pictures show. So if you can't tolerate that, you should steer clear.But the major issue is the craftsmanship. Or lack thereof. I bought 2 units, and had problems with the tops of both (though the rest was just fine). Unit #1 was nicely finished, but had scratches under the lacquer they couldn't be bothered to try and correct before putting on that coating. So I get to live with them forever. It also has a streak of very shiny material, where they slopped excess lacquer, and failed to wipe it off. It catches the light from a number of angles. Worst of all though, the top is completely split out near one corner, and I'll have to try and glue it back down and hope it's not too noticeable.Unit #2 had a different set of issues. The top is sanded and stained, but they didn't bother to apply a lacquer coat at all! There's no shine on it, you can easily see and feel the grain of the wood, and it looks completely different than the first. There was also one knothole where the wood had fallen completely out, so they filled an almost 1" diameter(!) empty hole with brown wood filler, with a slight cratering. The lack of any grain there is very evident (just flat, solid brown).As mentioned at the beginning, these are packed extremely well, and it would be very hard to get them repacked to ship back, if possible at all. Assuming one was willing to take the considerable time to disassemble them first. So I wound up keeping them, though I would have happily shipped them back. It's unfortunate, because the issues could have been easily avoided, if the manuf., cared to try. It's fundamentally a good product, potentially a 5 star value, ruined by lack of care. Oh, and I tried calling their so-called customer support phone # several times, with no answer during business hours.There's no way I would ever buy another product from this manufacturer, due to the poor craftsmanship. Regardless of how nice the design, or how good the pictures look. And since they'll be in my home for the next 10+ years, I will be pointing out their defects to many visitors, and educating them about Simpli-Home products.Lesson learned: products that aren't reasonably returnable if they prove to be unsatisfactory, should not be purchased on-line, unless you feel like gambling. I didn't realize that (my first purchases of furniture on-line), and lost, twice. 2A pretty fair disaster.The first sign of trouble came with the drawer assembly. The back of the drawer could not be attached because the pre drilled screw holes do not line up (Not even close)! Nevertheless I successfully assembled the rest of the unit.Then came time to insert the (now 3 sided) drawer. The drawer would not close all the way, and there was a 3/4 inch gap between the top of the drawer and the shelf immediately above it. (It's supposed to be flush). The reason for this is because the pre assembled rollers that the drawer slides onto were put in the wrong place!Too big of a hassle to return (and I couldn't open the box without destroying it), so I am discarding the drawer, turning the unit around so that the back is facing the front, and I'm going to use it that way so it won't be a complete waste of money.I will not be buying from this manufacturer again. 1Amazon Made It WorkAll told, this turned out to be a reasonably good purchase. It's a hard one to rate, because I am not sure I'd be as happy if I had purchased the same product somewhere else. Amazon's Prime service is what turned a disappointing purchase into a better one.For starters, I bought my table at a nice discount on Prime Day, which was in July. The table arrived; we put it together--not something that I'd have been comfortable doing on my own, but those comfortable with a tool box should be okay. Then we discovered that the drawer pull was missing. When I contacted customer service, I requested that they just send us a drawer pull. We really didn't want to have to pull the thing apart, stuff it back in the box, and send it back; neither did we feel we should have to go out and buy the darned drawer pull unless there was an incentive attached. A lot of companies would have taken that unpleasant road: either send it back or don't. Fortunately, Amazon told me that we could either get a one-third discount (on top of our Prime Day savings) or receive another table free. Oh, heck yes! We bought a drawer pull, put our second table together, and now we have new furniture at what works out to be thrift store prices; possibly better, in fact.The wood is reasonably thick, about how it looks in the picture. The drawer is about the right size to hold a couple of magazines and maybe two or three remotes, or equal size items, without having to pry things out when removing. The drawer slides smoothly with no catching. However, I do note that the table legs, while not badly unbalanced, are not exactly the same length and so if I put my hand down on one corner, there's a small amount of tipping. However, it's stable enough that I'm not going to have my coffee cup go flying away or my phone fall off the table. It's just slightly wobbly.If I were given the choice to buy these under exactly the same circumstances, I would do it in a heartbeat. Not sure I would pay full retail price for them with another seller, though. 4Quick assembly, with one major oversight.I purchased this to replace an end table in my living room. The assembly was relatively straightforward, but plagued by one ridiculous oversight. They used hexagonal screws to join the various pieces together. This makes it difficult to get torque to start the screws, and in many cases you can't use the Allen wrench efficiently because you have to make several small turns.The rest of the end table is assembled with Phillips screws, so why would you choose hexagonal screws for part of it? Makes no sense. 3Great quality side tables!These were really a good buy for me. I purchased two to use as nightstands. As others have commented, they are a bit smaller than I expected, but they are super functional for us as bedside tables, as our room is smallish. They are lower than traditional nightstands but this works great in my situation because I have just ordered a platform bed frame, so the height will match up. The best thing for me is that the drawer is at the bottom of the table, because it provides a surface In the middle (a little cubby) for my laptop. I like to have access to it while in bed, but I don t necessarily want it on top of my nightstand because of the visual clutter. Same with my phone and watch. I plan to make some charging cable arrangements where the cubby area is a kind of charging station for my devices. The wood is beautiful, and although the warm honey was not my top style choice, it actually still looks pretty modern and fits in fine with my decor. The tables had a bit of a petroleum smell to them out of the box, but it definitely wasn t obnoxious, and I assume is the varnish or some such thing. Part of me liked the smell on some level. The best thing about this purchase was the packaging and instructions! Seriously! These were packed with such care and precision, I couldn t believe it. They even put spare parts in the box for clumsies like me, and maybe for people with mischievous burglar beagles who steal parts during assembly. I digress. Instructions were clear, straightforward, and precise. No emojis to decipher (I see you, Ikea), no broken English. You have to use a little muscle with the Allen screws, but hey, no biggie, just skip arms at the gym that day. I m happy with this purchase and A+++ to SimpliHome for the instructions and packing job. 4Good, solid piece of furniture.PLEASE NOTE: This review applies to all four pieces of furniture we purchased. This end table storage was the first we put together and the easiest piece with no "issues". Ok...read on.First, this is fairly decent wood and material. There were some minor imperfections in the finish but I expected that with the "distressed" finish. The directions were OK but could use some improvement in identifying which is front, back, etc. Some pieces were marked left and right; but front and back would also be very helpful as I'll mention later. And packaging was really good; we didn't have any damage to any of the four pieces we purchased. From other reviews I read, I think we got lucky there.Now, on to the OK and some not so good stuff. My husband and I are pretty good at working together, following directions, and assembling things which need assembling. We purchased four pieces from Simpli Home. The first, an end table, went together like a breeze. Next, the coffee table was fairly simple but with two mishaps: we had a divider piece turned around, and the hardware provided was for a chest of drawers and not a coffee table. We were able to purchase the needed wooden dowels from a local hardware store and use most of the other provided hardware. Unfortunately, the knobs were incorrect so I'm waiting for their customer service to get back to me. Third came the storage cabinet which my husband assembled all by himself with no problems. Finally, this beast of an entertainment center. After hours of assembly by two fairly qualified persons, we have one jacked-up piece of furniture. We had to un-assemble it to turn around the middle section when we realized two pieces were backwards. After reassembly and putting the hardware on, we then realized the end sides were also facing the wrong way so the front doors on the ends can't be mounted; the hinges won't fit. Finally, the directions aren't clear which way the bottom shelf of the flip-down section needs to be mounted; it looks like the side with the beveled out indentation for the hinges goes face up; but when we tried to mount the flip-up door, it's way out of alignment. We're not going to bother taking the whole thing apart just to turn around the two end pieces so we're going to leave the ends open; we'll make it work. We're also going to take off the flip-down door and leave that open, too. So, bonus, we can use the knobs from these unusable pieces and mount them on the coffee table.If you're interested in any of the furniture from this company and aren't fully versed in assembly, I recommend you find the extra $$ and opt for the pre-assembly option. 4BEWARE OF THOSE CAM LOCKS!!I am not the handiest person, but over the years, I have managed to assemble a lots of things that I got from Amazon.This one got me AT THE FINAL STEP. No, I am not going to ask for a refund, nor would I want a replacement -- I don't want to have to go through the assembling again, and I am not even sure that I would have better luck next time anyway.This is a good looking table and very solid, but in my opinion the assembling is not for the amateur. Just opening the tightly wrapped packaging was a challenge, and then you are faced with 9 wood pieces, 14 allen-key screws, 8 cam lock and pins, and 8 dowels for the assemblage.If you are unfamiliar with cam locks, I strongly recommend doing some research on them before you start the assembling. It took me hours to put everything together, and just when I was congratulating myself, I fumbled at the last step (step 7) where the table top was to be attached to the bottom with 4 Cam locks. Lining everything up was no easy task -- the table is hefty and the Cam Lock pins have to have been screwed in just right. Sadly for me, two of the Cam Locks could not be tightened. And unfortunately I had screwed in the other two cam locks so that there was now no way to undo those two and try to do over. So now my table top is not secured to the rest of the table.I suspect I am not the only one who has trouble with this step. The manufacturer (Simpli Home) has posted a web page titled "My cam-locks don't lock - what do i do?" And I suspect perhaps that's the reason why there are 4 dowels provided with pre-drilled holes at each of the corner under the table top, so that even unsecured, the top at least would not slide off.I learned an expensive lesson. 3Real Wood is the Key to Good FurnitureI have purchased countless pieces of furniture over many years in which you have to assemble and they all have some quirk such as bad instructions, holes don't line up, scratches here and there; but this has got to be the closest item to assembled furniture I have ever encountered. And yes, like other reviewers I encountered similar problems and the drawer took some tweaking, but overall the value is excellent. Had a small scratch under the top, but not exposed with it put together, instructions were good but not the absolute best, one piece did not have an "identification letter" but you could determine what it was by the pictures in the instructions. Bottom line, the finish is as good as any assembled furniture, the packaging with "an extra" bag of small parts (not needed) was a plus, the overall craftsmanship was very good, and the way in which it was packed was some of the best I've ever seen. And seriously, it took longer to unwrap all the pieces and get it ready to assemble than the assembly itself which took just me alone about 20 minutes and I was placing a table lamp on it. Perhaps when you are assembling all genuine wood pieces it's much easier and faster than dealing with particle board or any other manufactured "wood" stuff! Black furniture is so easy to repair scratches with a black felt pen too! 5Great table, color may varyThe tables look great. The colors vary some. One of the tables was as we expected. The other, and the coffee table were a bit darker, but nothing so bad that we returned them. It's not that noticeable when they are placed on opposite sides of the couch. Overall, it's a lovely set. They are softer wood, so beware they will ding easily if you have, say a toddler crashing cars onto them. 5Heavy Laser Printer Challenges Strength of End TableI purchased the Shaker End Table in honey brown as a printer stand for a Brother Multi Function Laser Printer. The honey color, as shown on Amazon, was an accurate color representation and an almost perfect match to other furniture in my home office.Just as important, it lived up to my expectations on holding a large, four-color laser printer that weighs more than 80 lbs. This is not a little desk-top ink jet printer, but a good-sized office printer. The all-wood construction (all pine, no particle board) is sturdy and the top and legs are well-supported with cross pieces. There is no wiggle even with this much weight on it! So, if you plan on using it as a bedroom end table, you'll have this piece for a lifetime.The end table has plenty of storage: In my case, a full ream of paper fits in the drawer a drawer with wheels and metal slides. A brushed nickel plated pull looks nice on front. Also, the shelf is handy for magazines, remotes, cell phones, and tablets. A small speaker for music would be perfect!The honey brown stain is transparent enough to allow the grain of the wood, as well as some knots to show through, enhancing the rustic feel.The furniture came carefully packaged in one box with no damage. All the hardware was in one package and nothing was missing. The simple instructions included illustrations and I completed the assembly in just over an hour. For your convenience, use a ratcheted hex key driver with metric tips. It will help in assembly for the end table and with any other furniture you assemble in the future. A ratcheted set is not absolutely necessary, however, since the correct size hex key is included. Also, if you use an electric drill as a screw driver on any furniture, be sure it is variable speed and lower the torque to prevent damage to the wood.Overall, this is a superior product in this price range, and a great value. 5
