Top-rated pan for a budget priceAfter LOTS of research, I decided this was the pan to buy. It was recommended by top chefs as the budget choice. However, the reviews all pretty much said a coated pan has about a 5 year life if taken care of. So why spend a lot of money if it's only going to last 5 years. Some of the top-rated pans were over $100! This pan was under $20 shipped. We've used this pan several times and the results have been great. The best part? The cleanup! Nothing has "stuck" so far that a paper towel wouldn't wipe away. Very happy with it! 5Does Not Have A Flat Bottom, Right Out Of The BoxI bought this pan, based on the extremely large number of 5 Star Reviews, as being the lesser of two evils, when compared to so many other non stick brands. This particular model had the lowest percentage of 1 Star reviews out of dozens of brands and models that I researched on Amazon. I noted that many of the bad reviews mentioned the fact that the pan was not flat in the middle (being convex, or higher in the center). I also noted that the manufacturer made comments within those reviews that the pan can warp upwards, in the center, if it is subjected to "too high" heat, without anything in it, and/or running cold water into an already very hot pan, which can cause it to warp. With that warning heeded in the 1 Star reviews, when I received the pan from Amazon, the first thing I did when I took it out of the box, was to pour some cold oil into the new unused, cold pan, never heated yet on the stove. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in what I saw (picture attached). If TFal can't manufacture a flat bottom pan, off the assembly line then they ought not to sell their pans, while claiming that they are flat in the center.TFal has multiple iterations of their non stick pans, and I purposely bought this one, after inspecting various models in retail stores and noting that this model had the thickest metal, compared to other TFal models. Thus I assumed that the thicker metal would insure a flatter bottom. But, sadly TFal is producing this model with a built in hump in the middle that forces product to the edges. Or they produce some that come out flat and some that do not.....roll the dice and hope you get a flat one.I am a former "upscale restaurant" owner with 20 years of extensive cooking under my belt, as well as being an extremely accomplished cook at home, and most of my kitchen cooking gear is very expensive restaurant grade stainless steel clad, with aluminum cores and very thick bottoms. My "home use" professional restaurant skillets cost $200- $300 for a 12" or larger, and that is what I always cook on, at home, due to their performance and being able to develop "fond" for deglazing, extremely even cooking, heat retention, etc. Thirty years ago, as a young adult, I fell for the "Teflon" rage and had a full set of Teflon cookware and after just a couple years of use, the coating simply wore off, in spite of always using plastic spatulas and wooden or plastic spoons. After that, I swore never to buy non stick again. But technology changed dramatically with all of the new surface materials, although I still resisted trusting any of it.But I recently decided that I needed a durable non stick skillet for some very specific dishes and had hopes that this one would perform as expected and more in line with the huge number of 5 Star reviews. I figured what the heck. It wasn't as if I were spending over a hundred bucks for a pan, so the risk/reward factor compelled me to give it a try, after some research. With this higher grade TFal model, If it were not for the convex center which causes ghee, oils, and liquid contents to migrate to the outside perimeter (causing uneven cooking results), I would give the pan high marks for its non stick properties and easy clean up. And the heat spread within the pan seems to be pretty even and consistent, as long as you have it centered over the heat source (I use a gas range), and you maintain the heat source at a level that does not shoot out beyond the edges of the pan (especially with gas, which will toast anything near the sidewalls, while delivering less cooking heat near the center....common sense.Be cautioned though that the surface can be pretty easily scratched with anything that is not plastic. I had used some metal restaurant tongs to gently grab the raised edge of some bacon strips to turn them, while trying not to even touch the non stick surface. When I went to wipe out the pan with a soft sponge after it had cooled down, I noticed an inch long barely noticeable scuff on the surface. It was not enough to in any way alter the integrity of the not stick surface and will probably not result in any negative impact down the road, but I did notice that a very slight scuff occurred. Going forward, nothing will ever touch the surface of this pan, except for rubber coated whisks, rubber coated tongs, etc.Although I am hopeful, that Tfal might be able to replace this defective pan with one that comes from the factory absolutely flat in the center. But that might be an unrealistic expectation because, in order to accomplish that and prior to shipping, TFal would have to do a water test inside of a replacement pan to see if the water migrates to the outer edges of the pan....and if it doesn't, send me a flat replacement, because I do like the pan for its performance, if it were absolutely flat, like my professional grade skillets.****************Revised Update********************One week after I received this pan, I called TFal's customer service. Of course they were cordial and listened to what I just described above, testing the pan, out of the box, without any heat applied, which proves that the pan came from the factory that way. They said I would have to pay for shipping to send the pan in for evaluation. The cost of shipping is close to the value of the pan itself and there is no reimbursement if TFal agrees that it is a manufacturing defect, of no flat bottom. They will replace the pan and send me a new one. There is no way that I am going to incur extra cost for this pan, and TFal could easily come back and claim that excessive heat probably warped the pan, or that cold water was poured into a very hot pan. I don't see how any kind of visual assessment from TFal is going to make a difference in determining whether my claim is correct or whether they want to assert misuse. So their warranty isn't worth a hoot, since you will incur unwarranted cost to return the pan, unlike Amazon's policy of issuing a prepaid shipping label to return defective products. So, I will return the pan at no cost, for a refund, from Amazon. You are rolling the dice on whether you will get a flat bottom, when you order this pan, so, just know that there is no recourse that makes sense, from TFal, regarding their warranty. 1I love this pan, but durability is not great.I've had it for about three months and I've been using it every single day. The nonstick works great! There's no doubt about it.But some of the coating has been chipped already. I never used a metal utensil and never overheated. Always used medium heat with enough time to heat up. I was babying it, but a few chips appeared in the middle of the pan. It's small and does not affect the cooking yet, but I don't see this pan lasting more than a year.I mean for the price and functionality I would say it's a fair deal if you can get one year of daily usage out.I recommend it with some reservations.Update:After 1 year, the non-stick still works great! I didn't get any more chips or scratches. If you take good care, it should last longer without any chips.I think the chips I got were due to either initial QC defect or my inexperience in using non-stick pan.I would give 4.5 stars! For the price, you really can't beat it. 4Horrible productI took it out of the box and immediately went down to the kitchen to test it. I put a little water in it, and sure enough, it is not a flat surface. The water went immediately to the sides. How can Tfal actually let a product like this leave the factory? I have another pan that does this and it wrecks everything I want to cook. That's why I bought this pan -- to replace it! The other pan is a Tfal too, but it is from Walmart and I figured it was a low-end product. Also, at least it started flat but the center popped up after a couple of uses. This one started out bad. Wow. 18-inch is great - it fits perfectly on the burner and lasts for yearsThis is my replacement for the 8-inch pan in the T-Fal Ultimate pan set that I bought 3 years ago. The lid in that set fit this pan. We use the 8-inch pan 1-3 times daily. My wife and kids like it best because it's lighter than the 12-inch, fits perfectly on the burner so it heats up faster than the other pots and pans, and it's big enough to make scrambled eggs for 5 at one time. It developed a few knicks and cuts in the bottom in the first year, then the dot in the center became a solid red blob and finally the silver and black checkering became a solid black. By the end of the 3rd year it was still non-stick but a little spray or butter definitely helped. It never broke down to the point that we worried about Teflon in our food. The handle is comfortable and stayed firmly attached with no gaps or looseness. To me, holding up well after 3 years of heavy usage is pretty impressive for a non-stick pan. 5I only wish they made toilets and sippy cupsThis is silly, but this pan is awesome. I look for reasons to cook now. I have 5 kids and have to apologize to 3 of them every night that they aren't getting to eat because I'd rather use this pan than my larger non-tfal one. Clean up is amazing. The 3 kids that aren't busy eating, fight over who gets to clean the pan because it's so easy. I wish they made sippy cups dishes. The hungry kids wish they made a larger one or their cheap daddy would buy a second one. Don't waste your money on the copper as seen on tv junk. It faded and wore out like my shiny wheat penny. This thing is like the dyson commercials...it just works. 5Works great but might not last very longWe purchased this in August so we've had it for around 7 months. I have been extremely diligent in using only silicon or bamboo implements. I hand wash and never use scratchy pads like Scotch Brite. At first we were extremely impressed with the pan. But I started noticing a darker looking area on the inside of the pan a few weeks ago. It looks like the printed pattern (not sure what else to call it) on the inside of the pan is coming off. I have no idea if that's a really bad thing for health reasons or not. I'll be contacting the company to see about a replacement. I don't expect coated pans to last more than 2 years but I had hoped it would last at least 2 years. In the photo you can see the pattern next to the center red dot is no longer solid like the rest of the inside of the pan. 212" pan warped out of boxBottom came warped to one side. Pro version I got had similar issue but was high in the middle.I have had really good use with the Ultimate line of T-fal in the past and really liked the higher sides and lip. Having it be warped without even getting to the heat is certainly not acceptable to me. I just bought a set of the 8" and 10" Ultimate as well and both were not flat as well. Also the non stick coating does not work nearly as well as the older one on the 8" I tested. Now that I have had all the T-fal pans fail to be flat including the Pro version, I am done with this make of cookware. Easy way to test pan before putting on stove is to put small amount of water and set on stove. If it pools to one side, turn pan around pan and if water goes to other side (follows that side) it is not the stove being out of level, it is the pan being warped. 2They are great; the nonstick coating is still working well after ...I have two of these; an 8-inch and a 12-inch, the older of which I've had about 2 years. They are great; the nonstick coating is still working well after heavy use. I haven't aggressively used metal implements on it, but light contact with forks and such seems to do the pans no harm. So far there has been no noticeable warping. The handle stays cool even when the pan is quite hot. I have been using it on a coil-top electric stove, and it heats nicely. 5Don t bother, spend the extra money on a higher grade pan.I know that this is not a high end pan but it was rated best in its class in a review and I needed a good pan to replace my aging Caphalon 12 pan with a growing bare spot in the center. I am very disappointed with this product. First it doesn t cook evenly and secondly the the non-stick coating is almost completely gone from the two rivets that hold the handle to the pan. I have to use a plastic scrubby to clean up after cooking eggs and even though I spray the pan with cooking spray it s not all that non-stick. The rate in which the coating is coming off, I will be in the market for another pan very soon. 2
