Customer Reviews

So far, anyway.. In classroom use (~35 pencils per day).Other reviewers are right - this thing is quiet! Quieter than my manual Boston. And it shaves tips quickly AND smoothly. (If you're a woodworker, you'll recognize that this thing makes clean, rather than rough cuts.) If you're crazy or fussy enough, you know that some sharpeners, compared to others, leave the wood SMOOTH. This one leaves your pencil smooth, which suggests to me that the cutters are working cleanly - sharply - efficiently.Oh, and did I mention the 10 year warranty? Other "good" sharpeners have a 2 or 3 yr warranty.I spoke to a Staples rep on the phone because my wife's electric sharpeners are all worn out. (She teaches 3rd grade, and has 3 sharpeners. The motors are weak and get hot, and they all sharpen unevenly, and break lots of leads.) I was inquiring, were any models rated (i.e. duty cycle) for a classroom (i.e. continuous use). I was told that her Staples School-Smart, and X-Acto 'Class-Happy' (I paraphrased that 2nd name. Sorry, I don't have the model #s on me) were rated for "5-10 uses per day." Seriously?! A model named "School" something, rated for "personal or light office use - 5-10 uses per day?" My wife also has a Boston, which is more worn-out than the other two. I don't know the ages of two of them, but the Staples is nearly new. I do know that none of the three is suitable for someone who will sharpen 10 or more pencils per day, or more than 3 in a row. (They feel warm, through their plastic housings, after about 5.)The Staples rep did tell me that, for ~$60, X-Acto has a model rated for continuous use. You can read the reviews to compare that model to this one. I did, and this one looked superior. Based on initial trials, I would say that this sharpener is as good as it gets. Super quiet, very fast, even-sharpening. It remains to be seen, whether it will handle ~30 pencils daily, but the heavy rating and 10 year warranty, as well as its mass, and the ease with which it sharpens, suggest to me that this one is a winner.Oh, did mention that you can just about see the tip as it's sharpened? And when the pencil is sharp, if you're not pushing hard enough to trip the auto stop, the cutters just stop making contact. So, I presume, one could continue to "touch up" a tip, if they felt it was needed. (I'm almost never pushing that hard, as this thing sharpens so effortlessly.) I'm quite impressed, so far. And if the 10 year warranty is what it claims to be, this is one he**uva sharpener.Edit: I just took off one star, as we've realized that the sharpener only works for pencils down to about 3". Still a great sharpener in every other respect, but one has to use a backup sharpener for shorties. 4Decent SharpenerIt is a drama finding a good pencil sharpener. Reviews are always mixed. Some people love their sharpener and some people hate the exact same one. Some of them start out great but don't have a long life. I spent a long time reading reviews and finally settled on buying this for my daughter's teacher. She had an X-Acto brand sharpener that had burned out in her classroom. We got this one and she loves it. In a classroom it is great having the rotating disk that allows for different pencil sizes. I am going to order one for home too. If you only need a sharpener for the standard pencil size, the School Smart sharpener has been good for our family. 4wife and I have gotten into adult coloring and love it. We were having too many issues with ...I purchased this sharpener to use with colored pencils at home as my daughter, wife and I have gotten into adult coloring and love it. We were having too many issues with trying to hand sharpen our pencils and thought this might be the way to go. We have had this sharpener for well over 2 years and it's been working great. We thought we might have problems with PrismaColor pencils since they are waxed based but it works perfectly as long as you make sure to use the correct sized hole for the pencil. This also works great with my polychromos as well as my other oil based sets.We love this sharpener and are super glad we bought it. We now never have to worry about getting a point on our colored pencils! 5Holds up in a High School English ClassroomI am a high school English teacher, and my students go through a lot of pencils. I have never had an electric sharpener last more than a few months in my classroom.... until this one. I bought it based on the classroom award and the good reviews - seemed like a good deal for the money. I have had this sharpener in my classroom for over a year, and it's still running strong. Any time it seems to run a bit sluggish, it usually means the cartridge is full or too many shavings have stopped up the gears, and all I have to do is empty the cartridge and tap the sharpener a bit to get out anything that's stuck. I like that it automatically stops when the pencil is sharp so my students can't over-sharpen and waste pencils. Students have sharpened colored pencils a few times, and it seems to handle those just fine as well. It does not have a heavy, industrial FEEL to it when you're sharpening, and so it doesn't SEEM like it would hold up, but it does the job and has lasted longer than any other sharpener in my room, which is why I have given it five stars. 5Easy to Use *** Update - Fail within 2.5 monthsI broke down and invested in a higher quality sharpener after being disappointed with past purchases.First, when the unit arrived I noticed the grey circle pencil size adapter was slightly dirty given the appearance of being used. This was fixed with a wet paper towel. However the shavings container and cutting blades appeared clean and new. I considered returning it but decided against it after using it. It sharpened both graphite and color pencils incredibly fast and quiet. Sharpening a box of pencils was easy. My kids loved to sharpen their pencils since it's so easy compared to our prior sharpeners. It performs very similar to the X-Acto School Pro-X which I use at work. Both quiet and efficient.*****UPDATE 11/18/2013*******After less than 50 pencils the sharpener motor appears to be failing. Now the motor does not have enough power to rotate. All it does is hum.I am unable to return it to Amazon so I will have to contact Westcott for repair. I will comment on their customer support after getting it repaired.*****UPDATE 11/26/2013*****Filed a warranty claim on their website a week ago with no response.I sent another message to their support contact email address with no response. There is no support phone number available on their website (hmmmm).I have a heavy feeling this pencil sharpener is now a heavy brick. If you don't hear back from me then the product was never fixed. 1Broken after less than two months of use.I teach first grade and needed a heavy duty pencil sharpener for my class. I had previously purchased this make and model years ago and was very satisfied with how long it lasted. It finally quite working so I eagerly purchased a new one, expecting the same quality. However, after less that two months, it broke. Not sure what happened, the motor just stops and will not continue to sharpen. Also, important to note, I never let my students use the sharpener. This was virtually brand new and the return window closed and I am out the 30 bucks and without a pencil sharpener. Not cool Westcott! 1Lasted a little of one year in a public school math classroomI teach middle school math, 5 classes of at least 28 students per day. This pencil sharpener lasted about one year. It still "works" but the blades are not sharp or the motor is dying... I used to have students save up their pencils to sharpen in my room. (oh, yea.) But not now. The automatic stop still works but I think this feature does more harm than good if you do not explicitly teach your students that they don't need to try again if the sharpener stops. If the pencil is sharpened, let the motor spin. They can feel that it is sharpened. If it stops, they don't know why and just cram the pencil in harder.I don't consider this heavy duty. 3Works Great So Far!This pencil sharpener works as described. I searched, long and hard, for an electric pencil sharpener that would not only be durable enough to stand up to multiple school years, but also had multiple size selections for different pencils. I have preschoolers and a kindergartener, who use a slightly larger than standard size #2 pencil. This has that option. After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned about it not sharpening evenly. We test sharpened a standard pencil, a "preschool sized" pencil, and a colored pencil; all sharpened perfectly, with no loose lead. There isn't a large footprint, but it is an electric, desktop sharpener so consider the desk space needed for that.Cleaning seems to be a breeze, set up is as easy as removing from the box and plugging in. The only reason I'm going down a star is because I can't speak on durability yet but am keeping fingers crossed it works as perfectly in June of next year (and longer) as it does today! 4Efficient, reliable sharpenerThe prior iteration of sharpener on my desk dates to the late 1990s. It is large, loud and only slightly heavier than your average tank. I love it. But, all things change and when the time came for a new sharpener I picked the Westcott based on positive reviews, price, design and, frankly, the autostop feature.Over the last month, the sharpener has received daily use and I am very pleased. Sharpens quickly, quietly (well, quiet relative to my last one) and the autostop works great. The drawer to empty shavings easily pulls out and returns. One minor issue: If you're like me and enjoy getting the pencils down to when they are both very short and very sharp, you'll need to hang on tight to what's left of the eraser as the distance between the insertion point and the sharpener is long (compared to my previous model). My old sharpener, now retired, is doing fine service as a paper weight. I didn't have the heart to throw it out. Old friends should stay together. 5If You Have Room For This, It Is a Workhorse and Looks Great to Boot!Heavy-Duty really means heavy duty. This motor is so quiet and has a lower pitch for a pencil sharpener. And it sharpened 21 pencils in a row without any laboring or skipping.I also like the dial-the-size ability. I had a pencil that looked the same size as the other pencils, but it had an octagonal shape. It wouldn't fit in the regular sharpening opening of the other no. 2's. So I just dialed up a size, and the pencil was still kept at a steady angle while being sharpened. The largest of the dial sizes is 11mm diameter. The downside of the iPoint Evolution Axis is that this is larger, takes up more room. It's 7.25" from front to back, 5.25" high, and almost 5" across at the front base. The collection bin slides out easily, dumps easily, and inserts back in easily. It's smaller sister sharpener, theWestcott iPoint Curve Axis Electric Heavy Duty Pencil Sharpener (15512)has the advantage in that its bin is lifted off the base, making it easier to slide the bin out if there's papers in front of it.But that's a small advantage. This is a workhorse pencil sharpener that looks good to boot.Happy Reader 5
